I have a monitor that when I got it, it was a bit hacked up (physically, the frame) and not working. I just plugged it back in and I'm getting a very mechanical sounding, steady clicking. I got close and realized the clicking was coming from a small board that was mounted right behind the flyback area. On the board is a small black box that is making the noise when the monitor is plugged in.

The chassis, thanks to member Slots, has been IDed as Rodotron CH-666/Mackvision 3129

This part...

and it sat here, connected to that rainbow ribbon thingy...

SO....

Questions:

What IS that black box?
Are replacements available? Or, is it functioning as intended (a safety device?) and indicating a problem elsewhere?

The monitor does not fire up when power comes on... just a little delay, then the "ka-chunk" sound every 1.5 seconds or so.

Thanks guys...

the black box is a simple relay. It probably applies 120vac to the chassis.

If the relay keeps clicking on and off(cycling) then the chassis is likely shutting down dfor some reason.

Id check the h.o.t. on the main chassis to make sure its not shorted, look it over for bad solder joints, and make sure theres not a crack in the flyback transformer.

Unfortunately im not familiar with this particular monitor so i wont be of much more help but good luck sir.

Sorry for this noob question, but what is "h.o.t." and how do I check it?

It's a fairly new chassis, so the solder is probably all fine, but of course I'm gonna check it...

The only connection going to this relay (& small pcb) is this multi colored harness. It connects to the chassis right next to another (possibly identical) relay box.

Ok, so after some searching/reading I see that "hots" are transistors.

Also, fuck this chassis. (not literally, mind you)

Relay

Its a Scan relay board

for the different Horizontal scan..

Hfreq has to do with a scan rate

put it back on the heatsink and forget about it..

You problem should be some where else..

Need you to put all back together and run some test..

It is a complex chassis and may want to send to happ for repair..

It will click when the chassis can't find the correct Hfreq

which from my experience It is only clicking because

of another issue not that board.

I can offer some tips.. for testing..
