Help Clean up the KLOV / IAM database - Pending Submissions

Yup, I know. Spending those $ got old, and as the economy has slowed down the $ have seemed more and more precious. When the guy that was doing it quit, I decided not to pay anyone and have wanted to get the time to fix the whole system anyway.... I figured the $ statement would raise a few eyebrows here...

The spam was the easy stuff. Now that the queue is into actual videogame entries the real work begins...

Far better to get klov'ers who care about the database to get involved for no cost, than to pay someone $1000 per month. I'm sure it's clear to you at this point that you will have no problem getting volunteer help from us.

It was probably these two records you are referring to, right?

I used the bookmark. Unfortunately it made it so quick and easy that I accidentally marked a couple legit ones as spam. I wouldn't reduce the # needed to nuke any more than that for that very reason. And it would be nice if there was a way to bring up a submission ID and revise your vote. I could have corrected them if I had an easy way to get it back.

I'm sure you got the right ones, but those links just redirect to the home page for me. Frankly I wouldn't remember at this point because I got pretty efficient at bookmark, refresh, bookmark, refresh, bookmark, refresh... so I didn't get a good look at them before they were gone due to the refresh. When you get 100 spam in a row, unfortunately it's easy to get in a rut and pull the trigger too quickly.

The links redirect if you don't happen to be logged onto the main site... bottom line, is don't worry about them... I think I got them spotted, and the multiple voter system takes care of these kind of issues.

Interesting. When I go to the screening utility page I get the following message:

Viewing First game of 119 available for voting (558 total waiting for elections).

But all I see is an empty box with no game listings.

Bug or user error?

PS: I am logged in. I see my login & user number at the top of the page.

It should be working again. It might be a weird mysql bug. I was working on a script similar to what everyone saw today but for text/description updates. In the process I changed a field definition. Though the field isn't used by the new record voting system it did mess things up (messed up a multi-table left join for you SQL types out there). Looking at it...it should work. I did a very quick work-around and will deal with it further some other day.

In short, it's back up...I think.

I just added a module to vote on text/description submissions...that is, text to add to existing records. There are over 7,000 such submissions in queue, pretty well spread out between all types of machines (ie: Videogames, pinball, Arcade/EM, slots, vending).

Since it is a new module, I've locked out all submissions except for Videogames that start with the letter A (or a number). There are still well over a hundred of these submissions.

Give it a try and in the morning if no problems have arisen I'll release some more. Most of them should be fairly fast to go through. They tend to be pretty obvious, and most are junk. It's amazing how much junk comes in. Lots of random words. Lots of people saying that they have the game (Tell VAPS, not the text submission system!).

Valid submissions would be anything that goes in any of the text fields (ie: description, trivia, cheats, etc.). If it is good information but needs copy editing it is still valid, at least at this time.

If someone has a nice compliment or for some other reason you think I should look at it, click 'FLAG' and I'll see it...

For this module I've implemented single-click voting. That should make things go faster. Also, unlike the other module, in this one you can change your vote as long as the election isn't closed (3 spam votes with no more than 1 non-spam vote will close and delete it, or 5 of any specific vote will move it into a queue for further action).

Like the other module, you have to be logged onto the main site (www.arcade-museum.com), then in this case go to:

http://www.arcade-museum.com/members/dr_main.php

It's also been added to the stats system already:
http://www.arcade-museum.com/members/statistics/top-voters.php

Thanks for everyone's help...

Text Queue now has 1800 entries, not 100 ready to vote.

It (only getting 100 entries) is because it was a new feature and I wanted to make sure there were not any issues with it. There was one. It was ending some elections after 2 spam votes instead of three, even though the code says end if votes for spam >= 3. If it was consistent it would be an easy fix, but it only happens every once in a while. I must have very subtle bug somewhere...but oh well. The logic only occurs in one single place in the program so its pretty odd. It isn't fixed, but isn't a big problem.

I raised the # of votes to shut off a spam election to 4 instead of 3, which means if it still sometimes ends them at 3 all is well.

It actually wasn't 100 game titles...it just topped at the end of the letter A. I just opened it up to all videogame entries with pending game submissions....over 1819 of them (with a few thousand entries in them).

Once we get a bunch of the way through videogames then I'll start to open up the pinball ones, and then the other types (>7000 entries total!)

Eventually we will get to the image queue...

I just shut down the text system for a few minutes as I had another idea...

Looking through these descriptions, it is clear that a lot of people have been using the description box as a way to comment on the game like that they loved it as a kid.

At the moment, all those entries are being marked as 'SPAM' (only choices are 'Pass, Spam, Valid, Flag Admin').

One of the things on my To Do list is to add a game rating system (how fun a particular game is). On the game detail page would be a score rating, and if you click on the score you get details on how many people voted gave it each rating. I think I saw the same type of thing on IPDB does this...

On this second page (score detail) I was thinking of having a bunch of comments people left about the game. What do you think of having an extra voting choice 'Comments' for valid comments (not 'for sale', 'help me fix', etc.) but for things like:

Balloon Bomber:
" I love this game and Im kind of miss it so much since I was a kid back in 1980. I just wish that will come back again and bring that loving feelings of this game thank you.. From the Island of Saipan USA CNMI."

Bagman:
" I LOVED the loud mumbling the Bagman made when he got caught... It made me laugh SO hard! :)"

Lots of sites like YouTube, etc. allow people to comment. I'd either defer all the comments to the 2nd page or just list the first few lines or latest 3 entries on the game detail page...

??

I like the idea of adding user comments below, I won't feel so bad marking them as spam then :)

I'm also seeing good descriptions with extra non-descriptive text in there like memories of the past, how many quarters were spent, high scores, etc..
If it wasn't for the extra text, some of them would be good additions

I'm just finishing up coding...adding a 'Comments' button for comments you want to save. We may or may not use the comments but it isn't any harder than clicking the spam button and then at least we have the option in the future... some of the comments are useless and should be deleted, but some (this game got me into gaming types) are fun...

As far as valid descriptions with some junk in them. All valid descriptions will have to be hand integrated into the database at the current time, so if the valid part is easy to spot and separate you can mark it as valid. No valid descriptions will go online without someone editing them.

The text system will likely go back online within 5 minutes.

I think a rating system similar to IPDB would be excellent. It should be on a separate page than the actual listing - just like IPDB though.

You may want to post some guidelines for entry submissions. Your point about the descriptions being too personal is a start.

The original descriptions were kept brief (something like 200 characters). KLOV was originally a text file, the though was brief details could be exported to a cvs file or xml, with codes for the other data to be exported for search, data mining, exportability, etc.

There also used to be rules about what the games name should be. The name would be determined by order of precidence: title shown on screen, title shown on marquee/artwork, or title shown on flyer.

Also, there used to be some supported tags (COPY OF, SEQUEL) to denote some metadata. Should we still use things like this, and if so, what are they or which are still supported (I see some have been made into their own sections, but some seem to be still displaying on the pages).

Heheh, just ran into this one in the descriptions.. CL anyone?

Is there a way to nuke an entire entry or entries made by the submitters name?
I've run into a couple entries like this one now : http://www.arcade-museum.com/members/dr_detail.php?game_id=10976

The time it takes to click 'spam', wait till the page reloads, scroll down to the next entry, click 'spam', wait for the page to reload, scroll down to the next entry, etc.. gets pretty large and I feel like I'm barely making a dent (though I AM in the 'F's", so I guess I'm making progress!)

AR., Your help is really appreciated. I'm hoping after people are back from the holiday weekend that some others will help a little more...

A new favorite,

Lucky & Wild:
This is the greatest game ever. I have personally played this game for 48 hours straight. It is a piece of art in my mind. One day I will take it to antiques roadshow and get it appraised but I will never sell it because it is priceless. In the future, I plan to make a motion picture about this game. When I play it I touch myself. I have mastered touching myself, driving, and shooting both guns all at the same time.
