Warning...long post with lotsa pics. I just wanted to share my latest score!

As of this past Thursday, Satan has one fewer game to play...

Some of you may remember this post about rebuilding a Star Wars Cockpit

Well, Steve was talking about this very gem in Brent's Hellcade:

At the time, I told Steve I would be interested if he passed on it since I was in the process of putting together an upright, so I had the internals & yoke covered.

Well, it took nearly two months to negotiate price and line up the schedules of the machine's owner and availability of my buddy's trailer...

But, on Thursday night, I was ready to return home (a mere 12 miles) pulling this:

Although it is a perfectly playable Great 1000 Mile Rally 2, I think I will convert it back to its original form...

The cabinet itself looks to be in pretty good shape. The bottom edges are missing no chunks and the edges themselves look quite solid. Here is one of the back corners and maybe the worst spot along the bottom:

That's gum in the second picture...from the 90s? Let me know if anyone wants it!

The plastic bezel is in good shape, but... R2, how am I supposed to fly...uhhhh....drive this X-Wing? Where are the brakes?!?!?!?

As you can see, the conversion did include adding a nice white button to the control panel.

I'm not sure the best way to repair this as I don't believe there are any reproduction cockpit CPOs available. Maybe I will leave it as-is for an eventual SW/ESB kit. At the very least, I'll change the white button to green to make it a bit less obvious...Any other suggestions?

Also, the driving gauges that have been added are stickers under some clear plexiglass. I am hoping that a little goo gone will help me take care of those.

It looks like the curved smoked plexiglass clearly is not installed properly yet either...

However, underneath the 3 stickers and black paint is the original SW marquee glass...in what (from the back) appears to be in pristine shape.

Now, onto the insides. There appears to be not much left from the original machine. No Star Wars PCBs or vector monitor (duh), but I have both of these, even if the amplifone monitor I have is 19"...Also, the wiring harness has been hacked out. And, I'm not sure that the monitor mount is standard issue for a cockpit, either...

The best part is that the volume control was bypassed so playing Great 1000 Mile Rally is quite ear-splitting...

I think the first order of business will be removing Rally and doing a bit of cleaning.

The big job will be removing the new "sideart" and black paint from the sides. I am hoping that the black paint has served to preserve the original artwork, which is hopefully in good shape. To do this, I was planning again to try Goo-Gone to remove the 1000 Mile Rally stickers, followed by either Safest Strip or Citristrip. Has anyone tried both and want to offer their opinion on what is most effective?

So, I will definitely be leaning on the KLOV community to help me bring this guy back. I certainly don't want to end up having this entered again into the Hellcade, worse than before!!

Sorry for the long post, but I am pretty excited right now...

That is going to be lots of work to restore, just an FYI. shoot me a PM as I've got some leftover parts from my restoration that you can have for shipping cost, if you want.

wow the brent radio krap-ockpit...

Im glad your going to bring it back. That pic on brents site made me want to cry.

chris is a good guy, if you have a question, he would know as ive seen the cpckpit he just restoed and its friggin nice man...

My cockpit is the result of the same project you're about to undertake... Mine was a converted Hydra game.

I had a stand up in fine condition but always lusted after the cockpit, so when I seen it in a local arcade I approached the operator and he agreed to sell for $400 (this was about 10 years ago!) I took it and swapped the guts from one to the other and sold the now-converted stand up to another schmoe for $400 so I broke even!

Unfortunately the knob that painted the machine black decided to do a more thorough job and scuffed up the art before painting it, so when I removed the black (using citristrip exclusively, worked great) the art was pretty beat. I airbrushed it a bit to the point where unless you're anal retentive like me it's tolerable. The inside was restored to near mint and I made a new canopy.

Yeah, it's got the 19", but I appear to be the only one in this group that doesn't really notice a huge difference to the 25" I've played since the 25" is set back a few inches from the glass and I don't mind a bit...

One suggestion for you regarding the control panel: The cockpit and the stand up CP is slightly different from one another (I think the cockpit wraps under a bit). I hated the hole that was cut in to my cockpit so I actually swapped the CP from the stand up and did so in such a way that it's not noticable at all... So you could probably do the same with your machine if those holes bugged you enough.

Good luck, and nice score!

(now if only somebody would hurry up and make some friggin' repro side art!!!)

@bones3010-
Yes, I hope the guys that converted it were not thorough to the point of scuffing the sideart! My understanding is the upright and cockpit control panels are different (in the way they are bent). I'd be interested to see a picture of your upright panel in the cockpit. First, I'll try a green button or maybe even a square button that would fit the graphics on the CPO better.

@smpoponi-
Thanks for passing on it and pointing me in the right direction.

This one's not the greatest shot but it's all I have at the moment... You can kinda see the CP here and hopefully will give you an idea what it looks like in person. Unless you have one side-by-side you won't tell that it's an upright panel. It looks completely natural. The ONLY drawback to doing it this way was that I had to bolt it permanently in place. If I remember correctly there were latches or something of the like that allowed a hinge to swivel the original cockpit CP open. On mine I just used a nut/bolt situation so if I really had to open it I could, I'd just have to go inside and unbolt it, but in the 10+ years I've had it I've never had to. You be the judge and decide what you'll want: An original with a hole or a complete one that doesn't swivel open. I think that CP's come up fairly rare on ebay, and if it's a cockpit then it's probably even moreso, but I suppose you can go that route too and see what happens...

Good luck!

I have yet to see a repro set for those. Hopefully it's not too late. I can't recommend enough the use of the graffiti remover you can buy from Home Depot. It doesn't hurt the decal and removed even the toughest oil based paints. I would highly recommend you try that in case there aren't repors around for it.

So what is the best/safest paint remover? I've seen folks having success with grafitti remover/citristrip/safest strip. Has anyone had experience with all three? Are some better in certain situations (oil vs. latex paint?)?

I tried several on my cockpit (Goof off 2, lift off grafitti remover) but I ended up using 3M's safest stripper. It didn't work too bad, but i had to do some type of sanding to get down to the layer I wanted to get started. On my cockpit, I eventually realized that the main sideart was not there once I got to the wood, but the art was in the canopy arch, so it was not a complete waste.
