heard the Tempest whirrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr for the first time yesterday.

I've read countless articles here about how the original, worn, Tempest spinners have this infamous whirrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr sound when they are spinning.

Yesterday my complete CP arrived from member johnnya and, upon opening the box, I immediately checked the spinner assy to see if it made this noise. Shonuff, it does.

For the sake of nostalgia I totally foresee leaving mine in that fashion, and not doing a lube or rebuild on it unless it's absolutely necessary.

It's really nice to be able to share and be included in yet another popular piece of arcade gaming lore. Damm I miss those days!

I don't think it'd feel like you were playing Tempest if you didn't get that sound when you spun it fast :D

I used some 3 in 1 oil on my Tepmpest spinner a while back and it made it significantly quieter. I'm not against the noise at all, but I've been doing more preventive maintainence lately and that was just part of it.

I guess what I don't get, since I've never made it that far on Tempest yet, is how do you control what you're shooting at if you spin the spinner that fast? I'm currently at the skillset where you basically "dial" over to what you're firing at, get it, and then move along to the next one. How do you fire at the things coming at you, if you just give it a random "PLACE YOUR BETS PLACE YOUR BETS!" roulette-style spin?

For me, if there's a specific enemy I feel is the biggest threat and want to get rid of it, I'll still fire a few shots towards any other enemies as I'm spinning over to the specific one. It may not be horribly accurate (depending on how fast I spin) but it can't hurt either.

That's cool SGG, I'm sure as you get higher up in the game, it's gotta be harder to be as accurate for single shots.

Crap. Now in talking about all this, the price for the vector-VGA adapter is starting to seem a little more worthwhile :D

Somewhat unrelated, but how acceptable does a vector game look on an SVGA monitor?

One of the things I really enjoyed about vectors was how bright the displays were... because the beam was concentrated only on active areas. On a raster the beam is still scanning, so it wouldn't be as concentrated and you'd lose some of the intensity... I'd think... or am I wrong?

I don't know (I've only ever played a couple of times, and I'm no good at it yet), but my guess would be that you spin fast, then fire at just the right moments as your ship swings around - there's a limit to how fast your ship actually moves, so I think this technique should be possible.

One of the things I always enjoyed about tempest was the speed of the gameplay. The little ship will spin around pretty damn fast.

To me it's funny to hear people happy their Tempest whirrrrs... It doesn't annoy me, but I always thought mine was in need of an overhaul! I will try the 3-in-1 oil just to quiet it down a little...

I actually traded an 'upgraded' spinner to 30FathomDave that didn't have the "Burrrrrrrrr!" for the one he had that did have the sound...

I lurvs the Burrrrrrrrrrrr. ;)

Count me in on the other side of the argument. I like the spinner to spin freely and quietly. To hear the game sound click-click-click as the guy crawls around the edge and then do a quick spin and grab to get him to the opposite side fast without having to worry about how far he's really going to go. Plus it's just satisfying to give it a quick spin once in a while to see how many times you can get him to go around before it stops.

But the BRRRR Does bring back the memories. Ok, there's joy on both sides. I'll take one of each kind please.

That's too damm funny. :D

As for the res of Tempest on SVGA, there's a linky to see it for yourself at the vectorVGA site. When I saw it being displayed on the 50" monitor, thoughts beamed thru my mind of putting a splitter in it somehow so others could see the game in progress up on an LCD wall screen as you played. I think that would be pretty badass..

You know, I was skeptical about how this would look. But after watching the video it seems like it might be ok. It's hard to tell without seeing it in person but it looked pretty good from what they showed.

And when you compare it to a big gaping hole in your Tempest cab, it looks REALLY good. :D

Eh, from that demo video it looks about like I expected it to. Probably nice from the perspective of being able to use a new monitor and not having to worry about maintenance, but certainly not the real thing.

I have two CP's that I can switch out one that doesn't make the sound and one that does. I prefer the one that makes the brrrrr sound. The one that doesn't make the sound is a bit to tight and doesn't spin freely.

As far as skill level goes, as long as you in the blue levels, you don't really even have to move. You can sit in one spot and just hit the fire button when the flippers are right next to you.
