He’s on fire! Jedidentist’s NBA Jam TE Restoration

Just thought I'd add an update here because I occasionally get PMs about it. Here are a couple of mods I did to get the 6:1 Jamma switcher up and rolling. First, the switcher:

Here's the back where it's been documented in numerous places how to use wire jumpers to allow for the test switch on the cab to work for each of the games.

Unfortunately, one of my slots doesn't work right, but I have TMNT in it, and I really don't have to get into the test menu for it.

I had a piece of MDF laying around, so I cut slots into it for the games to rest in.

It was just the right height for it to rest perfectly with the games plugged into the switcher. This is an older photo of it in place...I have more games in it now.

very nice, and cleanly done.

I suppose i'll have to start looking into a switcher for my NBA JAM cab so i can have JAM,TE, and Hangtime going in it...

Now, I currently have 5 games installed.
NBA Jam TE
TMNT
The Simpsons
WWF Wrestlefest
Michael Jackson's Moonwalker

For each of the games, to make the 3rd and 4th player controls work, you need to add kick harnesses. Konami games like The Simpsons and TMNT have several dealers that actually make them like Bob Roberts and jammaboards.com (where I got the switcher from), and I also got the Wrestlefest harnesses from jammaboards as well.

These harnesses plug into the 3rd and 4th player connectors on the boards, and each wire will go to the corresponding 3rd and 4th player buttons. This can start to get really tricky when you have 5 or 6 sets of wires going to the same buttons. My solution wasn't the neatest, but the easiest. I bought a ton of 1:3 wire splitters from jammaboards:

I just kept adding them until I had enough, and ended up with this!

It looks awful, but I can't think of an easier way to do it. I could make my own 6:1 splitters, but that's wasting too much time for me. It's not as daunting as you think, but looks overwhelming...the wires from jammaboards come labeled, so that helps a lot.

Another issue you get with these switchers is feedback on the 3rd and 4th player kick harnesses from the other games. In other words, you'll be playing TMNT and it'll start coining up randomly. To correct that, you need to place diodes in line for each of the wires for each harness, so that you get something that looks like this:

I made my own "jig" to help hold the wires in place while I was soldering:

I've found that I didn't need to do them for my Konami games...TMNT and The Simpsons. I don't know why, but they seem to work okay. Wrestlefest was very finicky and needed diodes for everything. Also be careful because with this rat's nest of wires, they can touch each other and give false connections. I ended up wrapping each of my connections with electrical tape and that seemed to solve the problem.

The only other issue I ran into was the 3rd player harness for Moonwalker. Nobody makes a harness for it, so I had to do it myself. I followed the schematics, ordered some wire and connectors from Bob Roberts and made my own harness:

I didn't buy the proprietary crimping pliers, but managed with just needle nose pliers. It takes a little longer, but for 1 harness, it's fine. The only other thing I had to do with Moonwalker was to add the "resurrection" kit to bulletproof the board. There's a suicide processor that dies over the years and renders the board useless. By swapping out a few parts, it can live on. I used http://www.segaresurrection.com/ for the chips...I think it was like $45 shipped from New Zealand. I guess it could be done for cheaper, but I don't usually worry about saving $10...I like easy!

It's a nice piece of work for sure.

Next time you make those harnesses with the diodes, see if you can find some heat shrink tubing from an electronics supplier. Just slide it on and take a lighter and melt it in place. It's a lot quicker and more secure than tape.

You can get larger diameter stuff too. If you stagger the diodes, you can put one large diameter piece over all of it and make a "cord" and wrap it all at once, as long as they are spaced far enough apart.

Good point...I can see how nice that would make it all. I may give that some consideration when I do my final board install. I still can't make up my mind between Sunset Riders, X-men, Captain America, or G.I. Joe...maybe Superman or TMNT 2?

Really nice job you did there. Wish those 6 in 1's were more stable. I have a problem with my 2nd port, thankfully I only really needed 5 slots. But still.

I'm embarking on this exact project, even starting with NBA Jam TE. I may be reaching out with some questions in the future, haha. Great job with the pics.

Wow love the TE artwork. I'd never seen it before. Its great looking. I have an NBA Jam TE as well, though it appears to originally be an NBA Jam that was converted with the TE kit. I can only hope that artwork becomes available one day!

I actually have one of the sets of conversion artwork. It's pretty beat up, but the one piece I wanted (Instruction Sticker) is in good shape. The rest is bent and worn. One day I'll get around to putting in on and replacing my faded one.

Awesome job. I got a NFL Bltz?NBA on NBC that the operator painted black over the NBA Jam side art. Not sure why they didn't just leave it woulda looked way cooler. I'm gonna try citistrip and see if I can get it back.

Great looking game, I like the simple fixes you used.

Funny thing for me is, my Girlfriend's XC90 is my game hauler too. I can fit almost anything in there on it's side, and usually close the back door.

Yeah, I've fit Pac-Man, Turbo, and Paperboy in there, but NBA Jam was just too much of a beast. Fortunately, it's really head-heavy, so I wasn't too worried about it falling out.

There is no side art that I know of. Gameongrafix.com used to have some, but it may have been the regular version of NBA Jam, and they don't offer it anyway due to licensing issues. Maybe you can email them and see if you could get the file from him and have it printed yourself?

Still patiently waiting for someone to sell me an NBA Jam TE cpo. I scored a complete sticker sheet on eBay the other day though.
