So I recently bought an adapter to hook up my laptop to my nice HDTV so that I could have a bigger screen for some projects I'm working on and full 1080p. Well while I was busy messing around with those projects I decided to goof off and that I wanted to play some Asteroids in mame. For a vector game it looks sweet on a non-vector monitor! Just had to pass it on that HDTVs can display amazing game graphics to even for arcade games. Also put on Hang-On and it looks so crisp! Arkanoid is an interesting game with a trackpad (which I can do better with). I will always prefer a real game to mame, but it is cool to see these games in HD and with different control schemes.

*end tired rant*

Given enough processing (and a good enough display) you can make very good vector results, even on an LCD. But the processing can be pretty heavy, and the algorithms aren't simple.

I work for an avionics firm, and back when they switched from CRTs to LCDs in the cockpits, they put a lot of effort into making a custom avionics graphics chip for drawing vectors on the LCDs. I was walking through a lab tonight after working late, and stopped to look at some of the displays. They still have a great "vector look" to them.

Back in the 90's, I was doing some development on one of the libraries used for controlling the graphics engine, so I wrote a little program that sort-of duplicated the Asteroids "game over" screen. I got a lot of second-looks from people walking by my cube.
