I am so excited to get this up and running. But first I have to solve this issue. I have a trough 3 switch that when it is depressed it activates 4 other switches. For example, in test I depress the switch and it activates sw45, sw46 and a few others, but never trough 3. All the wiring seems fine. Anyone ever see something like this? The game will not start because trough 3 is screwy so it thinks a ball is always missing...

Any ideas?

The pinball ninja can help you my friend!

I had some of the same problems I hope this link will help! The Ninja kicks ass. And so does your game :) I love mine! One of the best Data East games I think :) Good luck Friend!

If all the wiring is fine, did you check all the switch diodes?
A simple way to test all your wiring is to unplug CN8 and CN10 from the cpu board, after you are in test mode, but don't reconnect with the power on. Connect a jumper lead from CN8 starting with pin 2 and with a diode with the banded side clipped to the other end, one at a time touch the pins of CN10 with the other end of the diode. You should get single switch readings in test mode. Then move the jumper 1 pin at a time on CN8 untill you've tested all the pins. Or look at the switch matrix in your schematic and just test the suspected lines. If all test good here you have a wiring/diode, or switch problem. If it shows multiple switches when testing them 1 at a time you have a easily traced board problem. Good luck!

Thanks, I am still testing away. Does anyone know where I can find these small screws locally that connect the trough switches? I have a few stripped ones.

Thanks

I think we need some more information. It sounds like you have a shorted switch or diode. Exactly which switches trigger when you trigger the trough switch? Take a look at the write up about the switch matrix at pinrepair.com:
http://www.pinrepair.com/de/index3.htm#switch
Specifically, look at "Phantom Switch Closures: a Shorted Switch" because it sounds like this is what may be occurring on your game.

On the JP it is very easy to have the trough switches and diodes shorted to the metal trough, especially if you have been reaching into the game through the coin door.

The trough switch screws are #4. take one to your local hardware store, they should be able to match it to one there.

I think I may have found something. The left sling shot was compressed. Now that I added some space between (sling shot sensor) the trough switch seems to be registering trough 3, instead of multiple switches. Does this make sense?

Yes, I think that sounds possible. The left slingshot switches are part of the switch matrix. If it was shorted it could have been confusing things and causing the strangeness you've witnessed.

Perfect sense.

The left sling switch is on row 3 (column 2). The trough 3 switch is on row 3 (column 6). The other phantom closures were in column 6.

It makes much more sense once you have figured it out :)

Now the left sling shot is registering as the "smart missle," and trough 3 is no longer registering. What is weird is if I lift up on the playfield the trough 3 switch in test mode will activate. It seems like everything on that wire is out of whack. Thanks for all the suggestions guys! I can't wait to get this thing running.

The Smart Missile is on the same column as the Left Sling, right above it. I think you have a phantom switch issue, check the other trough switches for a short or bad diode.

Do you have a multimeter? Do you have a copy of the manual? If not, download one from IPDB and check out the switch matrix portion of pinrepair.com.

I recently had a similar problem with my JP. The switch for trough #6 was wasted and causing my problems. The plastic case was busted up and causing a short. Installed a new switch and everything was good.

Thanks, I am going to replace the switch and diode at trough 3. Can I get these diodes at Radio shack? Anyone know what the part number is?

Get 1N4004 diodes at Radio Shack. If you don't have a multimeter, I suggest getting one too. One that has the diode test function on it (almost all do now days).

Holy shite! You can still get stuff like diodes at Radio Shack?

And here I thought they had turned into nothing more than a glorified cell phone/cell phone accessory store.

Yeah, you can still get some basic stuff at Cell Phone Shack as long as you don't mind paying 10x the price elsewhere. And if you don't mind blank stares from the sales staff when you ask about them having a specific part.

Still fighting the good fight. I have replaced Trough 3 with new switch and diode. I am getting no response from that, left slingshot is still registering as smart bomb, and have replaced the CN10 connector on the CPU. It really seems like everything associated with the WHT-ORN wire is gone haywire. Thanks

Seems like you might have a bad wire(s) in your harness. That's no fun! Check continuity from the CN10 connector to the various switches. Start pulling wires and cutting ties or you could disconnect the W-O at various switches untill the short goes away to help isolate the trouble spot.

Blitz, that was it. I found a fray wire and fixed it. I also replaced several trough switches and diodes. This is what I am left with, I think I am getting close!

Left sling shot registers as left sling and missle
trough 2 registers as trough 2 and trough 3
trough 3 registers as trough 2 and trough 3
and the missle registers as left sling shot and missle

All the other switches seem good.
