so i take the file i have for my battletoads to a local printing place, been doing business with them for small things for a while now so i was going to let them have a shot at it. i go to pick them up and they have them all printed out and everything looks sweet and then he tells me he can't sell them to me because they are copywrited.....WTF.... im not going to sell them i just want to put them on my cab......... anyone ever run into this???? where you able to get around it? i talked to a guy at EA today and he is going to pass our converstion up the ladder so i should be getting an email with some form of answer.

First off, why did they print it if it was copyrighted? 2nd of all, they can just GIVE them to you then, and they won't be selling anything.

I've seen issues like this before. A guy I know gets around it by taking the file and removing the copyright line, then adding a line somewhere that's a little outside the normal area (and that gets trimmed off before installation) that has a copyright line with his name on it, just in case he gets asked about it. One time someone asked him why it had a Bally logo on it if he made it, and he told them he was an artist contracted by certain compaines and was printing up some demos for their approval. He hasn't had any more problems...

I've heard of this... but never understood it.

They can pull "well, you don't own the art, nor do we... so we can't sell it because there's a copyright on it"... but then you should be able to point out that they aren't selling you the art... they provide a service. IMO, you're paying for their time and materials to print the art... NOT the art itself. There's a flat rate for size, number of colors, materials, time, labor, etc etc... If you printed out a Battletoads side art sized piece with a picture of your kitten on it, would it be cheaper than the Battletoad art? Nope... so, they're not charging an extra fee or making any extra money because it's a Battletoads picture on there instead of your kitten... I guess I'd never make a good lawyer because I can't see the big deal about it. It's not like it's a $20 job they're charging $50 for because it has a picture of something special on it (*cough*twobits*cough*)

The print shop is worried that they are going to get sued by someone, pure and simple. Once you get sued you either pay up (and that will do unfortunate things to your liability insurance premiums) or you lawyer up (and spend the money that way).

I have NOT run into this with printing out schematics and such, but my plan has simply to been to create a fake release letter from the corp in question allowing copying of the stuff for personal use. This gives the copy shop all the cover they need, so they should be OK to print it.

u get the same thing at the tshirt shops...they will bootleg a school logo for profit, but if i wanna syd barrett shirt they all freak out!
stupid
