Over 2.6 Mil. I'm guessing he beat it to get that score. #2 is super close. Huge gap between #3.

I was thinking about practicing up for this, but I don't know now. Yikes.

The top 2 were done at Funspot during the tournament last month. The 2nd place was done first, afterwhich the guy who now has first place said he must have cheated, cause he knew everything about the game and that score was impossible. Turns out he didn't know everything :D But he did end up getting the score back. I was there for some of it, but didn't see any of the actual gameplay itself.

very interesting...

2.6 man you would have to point press like you would not believe. Using Twin Galaxy tournament settings your score ends at the end of your 5th life and the best I can do is level 7-3 if I go straight through and quit after the 5th guy with 617,500 points. This gave me what used to be third place till some guy beat me just last week now I am fourth for the MAME version. I have however watched the playback (just yesterday in fact) for the MAME record which is 2.2 million and I could see how someone could get maybe another 1-2 hundred thousand points but I do not see how you could get all the way up to 2.6 million now that is impressive. Its all about getting extra guys to get the ending bonus when you beat the game and on the 2.2 mil mame WR that I viewed I did see a few spots where he could have knocked a turtle over and pushed it towards other turtles and then have mario run and follow the carnage that follows. If you hit a whole bunch of them in a few spots you can get a extra guy but its tough to time just right and you can only do it in a few spots like 5-1 and another spot or 2 that escapes me. Anyways just my thoughts having played the game a bit recently.

Keep in mind, guys, that you get 100,000 points for each man left over once you beat the game. If you finish the game with 10 lives (which isnt hard considering all the coins you get by playing through the levels) you get 1M points right there. I have had plenty of 700K games without getting passed the 6-4 castle. That score isnt that daunting. You would have to be able to beat the game though (which is no easy task). Vs SMB is awesome.

I agree. I bought it for my wife, but I love it and it will never leave. A nice challenge for those of us who can kick the nes version's ass. Especially with a joystick instead of a controller.

beating the game isnt that tough...

Now beating the game in less than 5 guys for me anyways is REALLY tough. I have beaten the game 5-6 times though and I can usually make it all the way till 6-3 before dying for the first time. 7-2 and 7-3 are rough there is no way around it unless you have some kind of SMB zen about you. Not to mention the pattern on 7-4 is different than the NES version so that always throws someone off the first time you hit it. 700,000 without passing 6-4 is pretty respectable point pressing in my opinion. I press it pretty hard and fast yet still trying to get all the possible points and again the best I can officially do is 617,500 on 5 guys dying on world 7-3 which is real booger due to all the flying cheep cheeps.
