I've got a GottTlieb system 80 Haunted House that is giving me some trouble. The MPU boots up, but as soon as I start a game the displays go blank and it locks up. Any suggestions?

Yes it does kick out the ball. Unfortunately, that's just about the only solendoid that does work. I did find the problem with the lock up. It wasn't the tilt switch, but I did check that. I had a bad 5101 ram chip. Once I replaced that, it doesn't lock up anymore. I found it by going through the self test and running #20. Now I just have sound, solenoid, and lighting issues. However, it's in a lot better shape than when I started.

pin repair

Sounds like you should start by testing the power supply since you have multiple areas that are not working......do you use a DVM?

Yes I have a DVM. I've rebuilt the Power Supply, driver board and the CPU. The original problem was a bad 5101 ram chip. I am, however, still having a lockup problem. The game plays, but after a couple of minutes, it will lock up and start to hum. I still need to ground the sound board and the driver board. Hopefully that will fix my issue.

pin repair

These pins were known to have poor interboard connections.....I would strongly urge you to inspect the connections to each board, since you have rebuilt the power supply, driver board and cpu.

I have rebuilt the PS connectors, the driver board interconnect, and the two to the left of the driver board connector. I still need to rebuild the display connectors.

Working but still locking up

Ok. I have the game completely working but it is still locking up. It seems to be a heat issue. I can play one full game and then a partial game. Then it locks up and the knocker coil locks on. If I shut it off and then turn it immediately back on, it will immediately lock up. If I wait about 30 seconds before turning it back on I can play a partial game. If I just leave it on in attract mode it will still lock up it just takes longer. None of the chips feel hot, so I'm not sure where to look. I've reworked all of the connectors on the cpu board, done most of the ground mods, changed the 6800 mF orange cap, rebuilt the power supply. The only things I haven't done so far is:

1. rework the connectors from the driver board to the playfield
2. tie all of the playfield grounds together
3. Modify the pop bumper boards
4. Modify the lower pf upkicker

Any Ideas?

A little more info:

I rebuilt all of the pop bumper driver boards. This had no effect on the locking up, but it did fix the non working kicker in the lower playfield and it also fixed a randomly firing pop bumper. Now the only thing on the game that isn't working right is the LP upkicker. It's very weak. I have a new pop bumper driver board for that.

If I disconnect the double sided connectot(A3-J3) going from the driver board to the playfield it doesn't lock up. Of course that makes for a really boring game. I'll be rebuilding that connector next.

I was wrong about it not locking up when I disconnect A1-J3. It still locks up with the driver board completely disconnected.

Something I noticed tonight is that I lose 5V when it locks up. Or maybe I'm losing 5V and that is making it lock up. I disconnected the MPU board from the Power Supply and it doesn't seem to lock up. I changed the CPU and it still locks up. I just don't know where else to look.

Jeff

No it does not have the reset card. The odd thing is that I lose 5 V when it locks up.

My guess - intermittent connection at the hot-plate transistor, 2N6057/2N6059. These can be a royal PITA at times.

If so i replaced that when i rebuilt the power supply. I will resolder it and see if that helps.
