Later this year I may be moving house and renting a place for a year or two. If I do the chances that the rental will have the power specs I'll need to run my arcade collection are almost zero.

I was wondering if a portable generator would make a good substitute and what kind of wattage I would need to run up to say 40 machines.

I was thinking an average of 2 amps per game = 80 amps multiplied by 120v gives 9600 WATTS, so a 10,000 running WATTS unit should be more then capable.

Also what other kind of voltage protection for that setup? Just surge strips?

I thought you owned your nice place there??! You would have to turn them on slowly cause of the startup surge!

Yea a nice big barn or shop building would rule!! Like your quick DK restore!

Whatever you do, look at clean SINE power units (they use an inverter I do believe).

Even then, I'd be wary of running directly off of a generator. Better to put a UPS in-between it and the game(s), even if it is a pure sine wave model.
