I need a new overlay for my Asteroids. I noticed Sabo has an upgraded velvet material. I was wondering if anybody had used it and what the difference was from his previous materials.IMG_1001.jpeg

I used it on my Sega Carnival restoration. It was nice quality but I couldn't really tell you what the difference is compared to normal overlay material.

Can you post a picture? I am curious. Most people know what the polycarbonate coating looks like on CPOs so a pic of the velvet type would be very informative, thanks.

I also have done many CPOs so when I say I'm not sure what the difference is, it's because it's very similar to any other. Maybe slightly smoother and softer, but that could be my imagination given that I know it's called "velvet."

You can watch me meticulously apply this to my bare control panel at the 2:54 mark (yes, 2 hour 54 minute mark!) on my Sega Carnival restoration video that I posted recently:

Nice video, great looking game, thanks for sharing.

I have to say that the texture does not look that different to the typical CPO, perhaps it feels different to the touch…

The velvet overlaminate is actually what was used on mostly all of the original CPOs back in the day. Its a thick 15m laminate that is very smooth to the touch and very durable. If you look at any early Atari Manufacturing plans they call for Velvet texture laminate for the CPOs.
