Has anyone gotten a bigger place mainly to accommodate their growing collection?

Okay so last year I started out with one and a half games neither of them worked. I made it my mission to try to get them up and running and although it took me a while I was able to do so. Very quickly I got the bug and now I'm up to 7 games. I know that doesn't seem like much to some people, however, I already had a complete room full of console games which was already spilling over in its own right. I haven't started paring down on my console collection to favor my arcade.
My wife and I are thinking about moving to another city for work and school, I want to move to a city that's cheaper so we can afford more house not only for ourselves and our two dogs. I I'm inclined to look for a bigger place to put my games. But my biggest question is out there is, has anyone out there but, rented or got a bigger place with their games as one of the biggest factors in their decision?

nope but i did buy another house but i have 170+ games and my wife is very happy with no games in our house so now i have another one and more.

What city are you thinking of? I bought a house with a basement and will be building a studio in the spring to hold more games. I have thought of moving again to have a house with a daylight basement because I hate dragging games out of the basement.

Actually going the other way, we are downsizing from my current 2400 square foot shop to a house with a basement and lets face it most basements are not known for the spaciousness.

But its worth it to move to cooler weather.

I recently bought my first home and the biggest concern for me was enough space for my hobbies! A workshop, music studio and arcade. I'm "lucky" enough to live in an area thats very cheap so I was able to get a nearly 3000 SQ house with a 4+ attached car garage. The garage is finished in the back with a nice floor and windows and 3 season porch off the back.

Im currently in the process of making it into my ideal space. The paint is still drying! Its a complex retro style paint job so its taking forever.

Ive been taking progress photos and plan to post the project when its done on the boards

I bought my first house and that was a deciding factor. At the time I had around 25 games. Ended up with 33 and two pinballs. I picked a suburb where I was able to get more house for the money. I looked at around 50 houses. I was waiting for the realtor to fire me. It had to have enough land to build a 1000 square foot gameroom. I ended up getting what I wanted. It was worth it.

yes

almost a year ago I got rid of 12+ storage units and moved into a 6000 sq foot warehouse.
It is my escape (happy place).

when i got started 2+ years ago. I had 0 arcade machines.

Today I have around 26+, unsure. No pinball games yet!

During 2014-2015, all the games fit inside my small basement, main floor, and upstairs... Then when I couldn't fit anymore... I had to purchase a 10x15 (150sq/ft) storage space for overflow...

...and placed my first game inside, karate champ, in May 2015:

Then 416 days later, in June 2016, this is how my storage unit looks:

...and the shit don't stop... Maybe another 1-2 storage units or 6000sq/ft warehouse is in my near future! :)

We are planning to buy a new house next year. My wife wants a better location with no commute, and a big kitchen. She also wants to be able to park in the garage. So, for me, size for an indoor gameroom or an outbuilding is the main factor. I have 440 sq ft in the garage now, and I want a minimum of 1000 sq ft for the new gameroom. Prices are crazy here for the wages, which the op alluded to, so this is going to be tough to find.

I am hoping for a basement with outdoor access, but the homes with those are all pretty old, and my wife wants newer. I would be happy with a large building in the back yard, but I haven't seen many of those.

I would rather stay outside of town and maximize the size of the house for the money, but my wife is refusing to commute anymore (20 minutes on a good day, maybe an hour on a bad one).

Cool..Will like to see the photo's!!!

It's definitely something I have on my mind at the moment. I bought my current home at the very tail end of the housing bubble and obviously paid far more than I could sell this for now. I'm trying to slowly save up money because the 1,100 square foot home with zero garage and wet basement means I had to "restore" the one cab I did get in the same room that was being used to live in.

My hobbies seem to be taking up more and more space, but my home accommodations aren't increasing.

Sadly, I figure i'm going to take a $30,000 or more loss on this house if I can even sell it, and the cost of housing around here is nuts. So I'm likely going to just have to cherish everyone else's projects for the next decade or so. All the while hoping there are still cabs left for me to acquire in ten years time when I should be able to afford another mortgage even if this house I'm in now doesn't sell. lol

The girlfriend and I made a point of finding a new place that could not only accommodate my current collection, but an expansion volume of 3 times the current size. Plus a photo/video studio space for shooting episodes of The Canadian Arcade, and a full work space/bench for projects. It needed to have high basement ceilings, good lightning, amazing access for larger games and lots of storage space. Thats JUST the basement...

We move in next weekend. :D
