has anyone else used radio shack 120vac fans in their games?

i'm on my second one now in my tempest. first one i got had a light burnt odor to it but was new in package, so i figured what the hell and put it in. got a noisy bearing sound from it all the time it was on.

so, went back and swapped it for fan #2. i've had that in for a couple weeks and it was nice and quiet, no burning electrical odor, however in the last couple days it started making another rattling bearing noise for about 5 minutes till it warms up and then gets quiet.

are there any good inexpensive (<$25-30) 120vac fans out there that work well for longer than a 2 week period?

search ebay for 120mm ac fan. I've bought several over the years. They're a ways from quiet, but they do move a considerable amount of air.
Here's a good example (i've not used this one personally, but it looks good - dual ball bearings, aluminum frame).

Ive used the Radio shack ones - not bad but exspensive.

I ordered a few from Bob roberts (12 i think) and about the same quality, just as loud (whirring) but cheaper. This is where i leave it (one in SW uR, one in SW cockpit, one in a sold Tempest, dont need anymore!)

the wind noise is ok. i don't mind that. it's just, with the first one and now this, the bearings start to get all noisy after a little while, and it sounds like you've got a bunch of rocks in a drier...

I have several RS fans. Pretty much one (or more) in every vector. Haven't had any issues with them yet. All run quiet and have been going on 2 years now.

I have three in the SWCP alone -- 1 for the HV/Deflection, 1 for ARII, 1 pulling air out of the top of the cab.

I just used a couple of Dayton fans; they move a good amount of air too. There's a guy on eBay selling them for 19.99 with free shipping. They seem to be pretty sturdy, but definitely not quiet. Not too sure about the long-term reliability at this point though obviously.

that's the exact model i have. i guess i just didn't get the luck of the draw... looking on radio shack's site, the fan doesn't have the best rating, but i guess i'll just wait till it takes a shit and then deal with it...

Cleverlyj,

Take a look at the Noctua fans. They are extremely quiet, yet still move a large volume of air. I've used them in PC builds and they are the real deal - almost silent, very efficient and they have a 5-year warranty. They might be a bit expensive, but you'll get what you pay for.

that looks good. however, i'm looking for an ac fan rather than dc, as i can run that off the light circuit and not worry about causing ar2 problems if the fan fails and starts pulling dc voltage.

Back when I worked at a bowling alley, I used a rat shack fan in a Fast and Furious driver and it worked fine. Game was on 14+ hours a day and had no problems.
