Ok I have a question about Tempest.
If you have an original Tempest from 1980 with a glitch in the board
Is it true if you get over 186,000 points and then die with 06 or 12 at the end of your score?
You get 40 extra credits?

Also is the game actually inspired by a bad dream from the progamer?

Thanks

With no research I guess NO and possibly.

I read it. I liked it, but didn't think it was great. The dialogue and characters seemed a bit cheesy, but I enjoyed the story a lot. I think they're making a movie out of it, too.

It was a fun read for sure. I agree about the dialogue but it was a fun trip through a lot of 80's nostalgia from a story that takes place in the future.

I was in the hunt for the DeLorian contest. That is, until the 3rd quest in the contest included setting the world's high score on Black Tiger, Robotron 2084, Joust, or Tempest. Then I knew I didn't stand a chance.

Book was a GREAT read, though.

The book is good but not great. Certainly worth a read if you grew up in the 80's and like video games and science fiction.

There are an amazing number of references to 80's pop culture. He was able to work Billy Mitchell's perfect Pac Man game into the plot among other things. Pretty cool stuff.

One thing I thought was interesting was that while I assumed thy meant that you had to break the record on an original arcade game, the video states that the winner broke the Joust record on the Atari 2600.

That was in the rules. Joust allowed both the arcade and 2600 versions.

Funny how the author kept saying you can't find the first gate unless you bought the book and not the audio book. Easy enough to figure out though.

Necro post, I know.

I just finished the book and really enjoyed it. Some of the criticism leveled at it here (and in the other thread) is legit but I didn't find it taking away from the enjoyment of the book itself.

It's a great, fast, summer read. Highly enjoyable!

For me it started slowly, then picked up speed, and by the time I was 1/3 into the book I was really hooked. The last 2/3 of the book was read very quickly! :)

Folks here on KLOV should definitely check it out.

The author is in Austin, btw. Anyone know if the author has ever been here on KLOV before?

I like to use these moment's to show off my '12 secret santa gift, a signed copy! I still don't know who this guy was but i'll shame him into light! LOL

I must say, I found out about this book purely by luck/chance, and it's by far one of my favorites. It amps up that nostalgia part of me, and appeals to so much of what I'm into. I really loved it, read it about 3 or 4 times, and it turned me on to some stuff that I never got into. I hooked over a dozen people on it as well.

I agree about the gates in his contest. First and third were cool, second one was absolute shitty garbage. Still, it was awesome to be a part of it while it was happening. I was in the 370's for clearing the first gate. Good times!
