I want to upgrade from the 50" projection TV that is in this game to a better picture. It has a vga output from the boards. If I hook it up to a computer monitor, it works but says something like 'signal not recognized'. I hooked it up to a 42" Sony TV and got nothing. I tried all of the functions on the TV with no luck. My guess is that the signal coming out of the Harley is not readable for a new TV. Do I have any options to upgrade the TV?

Thanks for the help!

have you adjusted dipswitches? could be like Naomi, where it runs in various resolutions, but need to set switches to actually tell board to output to that resolution

Even though the model 3 uses a vga connector it is really a medium res setup. I want to say the voltages are the same so it doesn't hurt to hook something else in, it just will not run on most things designed to read computer vga.

I would think something like the GBS-8220 video converter that people use to run arcade games off computer monitors would work and let you then run vga to whatever you wanted.

Edit:

Wells-Gardner has a 42 inch lcd upgrade kit for 50 inch projection games that supports cga, ega, and vga inputs. I would think it would work as well for them but it is a good deal more then buying a converter and a tv.

Micks - I will look into the dip switches and see what I can find.

ccosby - good info. I will look into both of those options. I was wondering if there was some type of converter out there.

Has anyone used the lcd upgrade kit???

Thanks guys

I want to say someone on here converted a top skater which is a model 2 system and uses medium res screens as well to an lcd or plasma as they were selling the crt system. I'd search around the forums, I'm sure someone has done it to a model 2 or 3 setup.

That would have been DogP.

DogP's conversion looks damn good.

I looked thru a manual (both regular and deluxe versions) and seen no mention of dip switches.

So it seems the convertor route would be ideal for the project at hand then.

FYI - Called WG yesterday and asked them about the 42" upgrade for the 50" projection TV. For $600 plus shipping, you get a 42" monitor, bezel, mounting brackets, and it is a plug and play upgrade.

It has come down a few hundred bucks then. That doesn't seem that bad for a commercial lcd.

Before doing anything I would contact Ken Westerfield www.irepairsega.com and ask him what he thinks. He is very cool about giving free advice, and is very knowledgable about Sega games.

Awesome contact, just talked to Ken and seems like a great guy who gave me some good info. Looks like that converter will work or if I find a TV with a rgb input and not a vga, might work also.

Thanks for the hook up Robotron Jon!

I've used the LCD upgrade on most of my sega rear projections at work (Confidential Mission, Maze of Kings, 18 Wheeler). They work well with no issues. It is fairly easy to install as well.

update! I bought a converter and hooked it up to an lcd and picture was great for the first couple minutes and then it slowly washed out to a red color. I tried different lcd, same result. The game does not do that on orginial tv and I even plugged in a computer monitor and the picture was fine. Bad converter??

Oh forgot to mention that I tried both 5 and 12 volts into the converter board.

Since I was over there diagnosing this issue with mikdawg... I've actually adjusted those settings, and tried many different resolutions etc. Nothing would fix the issue of it fading to washed up colors.

As soon as I would change the resolution the colors would be perfect, but again after a few minutes it was washed out to sh*t again. Same result with everything I've attempted to do.

My thoughts are really its just a bad converter box.. unless there was something I overlooked? Its highly unlikely, since I did spend a good amount of time going over everything. The only time it looked good enough to play was when the picture was basically black and white.

Apparently there is something I missed.. did a little research now that I had a few minutes to myself and found the Clamp st and Clamp sp settings can probably fix the issues?.. Keeping the st slightly less then the sp.

I adjusted one or the other, then went back to default settings as they didn't do any real changes at the time.

Called Ken again (he was super cool again) and he said same thing. He said to set the ST to 55 and the SP to 06. I will report back when I try this.

I put my setting to what Ken said to and it worked great last night. Going to test again but I think the problem is solved.
Thanks everyone!
