Some questions about those games:

1) Can you upgrade HD to RD ? Is it software only (I highly doubt it) or are at least the PCB's swappable (both ways?) ?
2) Which is the better game ? I played HD but not RD.
3) Are they still fun after a lot of play ?

RD is better than HD. RD is still fun after a while. It was the first game i bought and i still play it a lot.

I played Hard drivin when it was new. not long after they converted it to race drivin. The only difference being a new track. I would imagine the hardware is the same. It gets boring after awhile. i would think if you could link 2 together and race against a friend it would be fun

any atari game has security chips to upgrade. The only exceptions I can think of is gravitar to black widow. battlezone to red baron is close, but minor board changes..

race drivin uses a unique slapstic chip. So I think its not possible to convert A HD to RD without it.

I think race drivin is a keeper.. I think it goes well with my night driver, speed freak and airborne..

1-Race Drivin has a extra PCB in the stack...you can play Race Drivn in a Hard Drivin cabinet...and vice versa. You need to make sure that you get the "correct" version for your machine though. There is a upright PCB and a cockpit PCB. The cockpit uses a med res. monitor, and the software is different to operate the devices not found on the upright. (reverse, seat magnet, seat adjust, etc.
2-Race Drivin....you get 3 tracks...4 cars....plus you can link the games.
3-I played this alot back in the day....so I still enjoy it.

Great info, thanks.

Should have known to check Jed's site....I knew he worked on it after SW.

I've seen two (red) Hard Drivin's for sale and one yellow Race Drivin'.

Since I recently missed a PP cockpit I might check in on those...

Race Drivin' is the best driving game ever created, IMO. Waaay better than the Cruis'n series, Daytona, or anything else. The only game that comes close is the Rush series, but Race Drivin' still wins, hands down.

Race Drivin' rocks. I pumped a ton of quarters in to HD back in the day... and when Race Drivin' followed up I was hooked instantly. RD includes the original HD track too...

Hard Drivin was one of the few games i was really blown away by 20+ years ago, and was blown away again when i acquired one recently. Upgraded it to a Race Drivin', and was blown away yet again.
Tec 9 is right on the money on the differences. The main difference is that the compact (upright) uses a multi-sync cpu board. If it doesn't say that on the pcb, its a cockpit pcb.

I still dig Hard Drivin' and remember playing it as a kid. The one in my sig was dead when I bought it and it was revived by myself. Still need to do some brake work though. It tends to go out of spec. Just like a real car, it's scary to come to a corner and find your brakes aren't working. heh

That was your Airborne I played at CAX? Awesome game! one of the experiences that made it worth the flight/lodging for me. Thanks.

Race Drivin' is a great game. I cant seem to get rid of mine even as I am forced to make tough decisions about space. Untill I have the top score in the world it is still a challenge. Super stunt track will kick your butt for a while.

make sure everything works lol..

I used to own a cockpit but had to sell it when i moved. I now own an upright. Its my favorite game. All my friends say its unplayable or impossible to finish in time, then i hop on and buzz through the course wotrh 20-30 secs to spare heh...

That's exactly why I think it's a good game for home use...

Went to the place where I knew there was a red HD cockpit and a yellow RD cockpit....both gone :(

Still one place where I know there is one left...but it's a red HD cockpit.

not my airborne that goes to cax. That belongs to ken and tj.

I took a friends airborne to an early cax. the pic in klov is of it. Not sure why, but the cut out the part of the motorized canopy..

PCBs are indeed swappable. Just pop in a RD boardset into a HD machine and you're good to go.
