Hi all. I just registered on this site so be gentle.

I am in the process of restoring my first arcade machine. It's Hard Drivin (compact edition) by Atari. So far I've replaced the faulty power supply and made a new video cable because the old one was missing. Now the unit boots up and plays fine, with the exception of the monitor.

When I turn the system on, all I see on the monitor is a horizontal line that crosses the entire screen. I've fiddled with the various horizontal/vertical controls on the video board without success. On further inspection, I noticed a couple of capacitors on the video board have gone bad and leaked. Reading threads here it seems that Bob Roberts is the best guy to go to in order to buy a cap kit.

My Hard Drivin manual does not specify what type of Wells Gardner monitor is installed in the machine. Inspecting the monitor back itself only tells me it is a Zenith picture tube. Does anyone know? I *think* it's a 25" Wells Gardner K7000 model looking at the specs online, but can't be sure and there seems to be plenty of variations out there. Any help is appreciated.

Great site by the way.

If you post some pics, I'm sure you will get a response. Monitors get changed out of machines all the time. It may not be original. Even if it was original, companies sometimes used different monitors during production or whatever was available.

Yeah, I should have posted photos. Here's the board in question...

Also here's a shot with my second arcade machine purchased last week. It is Bad Dudes vs. Dragon Ninja and the previous owner really fixed it up nicely.

I'm not a Monitor Tech., but I play one on TV.... That looks like a WG K7000 to me.

Lucky you, my Race Drivin' has a K8000... :(

p538= standard re3s k7000, correct for the upright..

edit: damn you silverduck lol

dude.. you MIGHT get lucky here..

on top of bad caps really check over r101 and the other resistors in that area..

i dotn know why but the soder joints tend to cook themselves and also the copper trace will sometimes tarnish black and lose conductivity.

also while you have this apart if you wouldnt mind taking a fe3w picvs of how the monitor mounts into the cabinet i would appreciate it.. mine came monitorless.. i have a pretty good idea of how its mounted but would be nice to make suree.

I had a K7000 where one of the actual traces came loose from the chassis, touched the monitor cage, and made a crack that was heard 3 states away. Chad at Arcade Cup fixed me up.

Definitely a K7000 as others have also mentioned.

The "leakage" you mentioned is actually a factory glue used to keep those caps from vibrating/breaking during shipment, etc. (that's glue all over the HV shutdown pot also)

Horizontal line = vertical collapse

Scrutinize the chassis for bad solder joints, including the neckboard.
Plan on doing a full capacitor kit.
May also need the vertical IC replaced. (IC3 all by itself on the tall heatsink)

Hope these photos help in some way...

I've been staring at this board and I think I've gone cross eyed. Gonna give it up for tonight. Maybe a fresh outlook tomorrow will show me somthing I've missed.

Beyond that, it may need to go to a professional. Circuitry isn't my strong suit unfortunately. Worst case scenario, maybe someone is selling one that works.

You need to describe what you have done and what the results were. Did you do a complete cap kit? It looked as if you had some bad capacitors as you said. Did you only replace those that looked bad?

THANK YOU!!! oh thanks so much.. i had a sneaking feeling that they used a shelf mount monitor with angle iron mojnting it to the cab.. thanks so much! now i gotta go to storage and fish my shelf mount out....

You're very welcome. Chad is the best in the business at what he does, and he is very fast.

Just posting an update. I contacted Chad at Arcade Cup and he said no problem on fixing the video board. It was mailed off to him today.

At least this way I know I won't mess it up any worse than it already is.
