I knew it was bound to happen again sooner or later. walked in yesterday greeted to a blank screen on my UMK3.

I've had this chassis sent out twice for this same exact problem. don't use PNL people, they tried telling me the flyback was bad on this and I'm still trying to figure out what they "fixed" if it keeps doing this.

am I correct in understanding that something must have tweaked out in the power supply section, which then took out the HOT again?

it doesn't power up, just ticks.

I'll get some pictures when I yank it out later of this wonderful flyback replacement job they did.

Are you 100% sure the HOT is blown? If this is the common failure point I'd have to agree the flyback is probably the culprit.

I'm leaning towards HOT, because it worked about 4 power up cycles, and then on #5 it just didn't fire up anymore when I got it back the first time.

I don't think anything was wrong with the fly to begin with, I think that was just their way of driving up the cost. wasn't cracked or anything. when I sent it back for guarantee work I told them to check the power supply section. when it finally came back, it worked, this time for about 4 months.

my KI cab is on the same circuit, another Polo, and it's never done any of this weird stuff. (SHIT! JINX!)

If the HOT keeps dying and the entire monitor has been rebuilt except for the flyback, then I would do a flyback.

But first, verify that the power input to the monitor isn't too high. I spent a lot of time trying to figure out why i kept losing components on a monitor, before realizing that the input out of the iso was 138vac instead of 120vac (or 100vac depending on the monitor)...

that is because your hot is being driven badly.. the timing on it likely sucks because of some bad components.. or just send it in and I will take care of it once and for all for $65 shipped..

well for fun I decided to recap it, seeing as how I've never done such a thing before. but just a recap (no pun intended, I swear) of what I've tried so far:

-the HOT tested good PNP
-just to reiterate to mod: the flyback WAS replaced, and it's getting 119V. :)
-I left the metal power supply cage off, and found that the ticking was coming from the little black box toward the front
-there was another funky hourglass-shaped component that looked like it got cooked in the PSU

and judging by the solder joints, it looks like PNL didn't really do shit on it but change the flyback, and the black wire that goes to the neckboard, (ok drawing a blank, the yoke connector that goes to the pins?) was SPLICED instead of them running the new wire into it.

so for a stopgap solution, I think I exhausted all of gatordad's available parts and bought his U5000. :)

it needs caps too to fix the somewhat dull color, so I figured since it works I won't blow it up yet.

after all the work I did on the Polo though, I received the same ticking. sounds like the power supply is trying to start it up, but can't. probably the same problem I have with that Toshitbox monitor... something's driving something too high.

oh, when I was trying to remove the heatsink assembly around the flyback, I think I might've hit the yellow wire (that goes to the neckboard), it sparked. I figure with all the stories about KLOV folk working on monitors and they're smoking that it's not the end of the world.

................ but this is the most fragile, Italian-made, chassis to ever work with.

I had the SAME problem with a Polo monitor from a KI , won't power up only ticks !!! Drove me crazy !! Gave it a cap kit , flyback and HOT , nothing worked , and couldn't find any info on fixing it . I ended up giving it away . I'd send it to Chad at arcadecup .

Heres a thread I posted about the same thing .
