So i capped my Pacman cocktail project that I pick-up for cheap. I was very happy to see the monitor fire right up but the first thing I notice?..."Extra Hanglyman at 10000 points" Hanglyman?

Looks like it's a Pacman clone that I never heard of. The looks and sounds are exactly the same but the mazes are a bit different. Is this a rare version? People looking for this version?

It may be just different program ROMs in a Midway board but you could also have a clone board. If you post pics of the game PCB it would be helpful. If its an original board, you can get original ROMs from a number of places if you wish to change it back.

Hanglyman was the most common Pac bootleg I saw BITD. Usually it was just in a standard Pac cabinet, and many times had a sticker on the marquee that said "modified" It definitely took away the patterns from regular Pac-Man. The 3rd maze is completely open, with only borders and the ghost pen. The ghosts still follow the Hanglyman maze for the most part though, even though it's not there.

That looks to be a standard Pac board. If you'd like you can swap back the ROMs and you should be good. Many places offer the ROMs including Bob Roberts and Hobby ROMs.

Never heard of it and just played it. Interesting clone, lots of fun. I played to maze 3 and put it in rack test, but could not find the 'no walls' maze.

Rack test doesn't work for some reason, at least in MAME. It won't cycle between the two boards. If you got to the 3rd board though (first peach), you should have seen it. First 2 screens use the same maze, but on the 2nd one, it becomes invisible sometimes when you eat an energizer (similar to Pac-Man Plus, except it doesn't reappear when the blue time is over. It is still there though, and you have to navigate through it). Here's some screengrabs in MAME (last two are the open screen with no maze):

Level 2 w/invisible maze (during blue time)

Pretty common bitd once everyone and their brother knew all the patterns and pac made no money.

This, and another hack known as "PuckMan", was out there back when the machines needed a little "something extra" before Ms. PAC was released. I actually saw the "PuckMan" mod billed as "PAC Man 2" at one arcade. It added escapes at the bottom of the screen. "Hanglyman" definitely changed it up a bit with the disappearing mazes, which first go away when you eat an energizer (I think it is the first one you eat on the second screen). Then things REALLY get weird on level three when the maze disappears entirely!

I thought/heard that PuckMan was the name prior to wide distribution in the US. Once it was discovered that vandals would change PuckMan to FnckMan, they renamed the game PacMan.

Yeah, Puckman was the original name Namco called it. I don't think it was ever sold here as that. If you saw a Puckman, it was probably a bootleg (Falcon sold cocktails with bootleg Puckman boards in them). There were a few other hacks, one was called New Puck X, which had a similar maze to Hanglyman, with 3 tunnels on each side. I've got a bootleg Pac board running "Pop man" (has Popeye's head instead of Pac-man and the points are a little higher) that uses the New Puck X maze.

We had a 'Hanglyman' back in the day at the local 7-11. It was in a PacMan cabinet and you wouldn't know it wasn't Pac until you got right up to it.

That may be the only place I ever saw one in the wild.

There's a guy here in town with a Hangleman in his game room. It's also in a Pac-Man cabinet. I don't think he realizes it's not a "Pac-Man". Everytime I'm at his place working on games.....he asks if I can fix his Pac-Man?......the maze sometimes disappears!:D

That's funny!

I have a woman in the neighborhood that wanted me to fix her Ms Pacman- it was actually a Pacman Plus in a Pac cab with a Ms Pac marquee.

I hooked her up with a daughterboard, color prom, and Ms Pac roms.
