It's been quite some time since we've updated our list of Top 100 Videogames from 1971-2001

People have posted here and on Facebook about their thoughts regarding some of the choices (ie: Street Fighter series)...

It's time for an update soon.

What on the list is over-rated?

What is missing?

- top 100 games, why is this in year order?

- not sure why Xevious is on the list, annoying sounds. what makes this game so special to be included in the top100, let alone #48

- is Zaxxon on this list overrated? underrated? not sure.

- i rarely hear anything about Choplifter. ever. overrated?

- tons of games missing: chicken shift, mario bros, pooyan, crazy climber, dr. mario, mappy, space zap, and many more...

Greatest by what metrics?
Number sold? Revenue for the manufacturer? Revenue for the operator? Innovative? Industry impact? Cultural impact? Fun to play? Fun to watch? Merchandising?

Wizard of War? It's misspelled!

After a brief scan of the list...
I don't see Mr. Do! It should be in there.
Night Driver should be in there some place.
Needs Mario Bros., agreed. (not SMB!)

Some surprises.

On the women's games, I agree, but I'd add Alpine Ski for a 5th.

I'm surprised that Battlezone is on the list, but not Red Barron. Not that one is ostensibly better than the other, but they both have interesting game play.

As long as Zaxxon's on there, Saul Goodman.

Add Tempest to the ladies games list?

Missile is misspelled in Missile Command.

if i suggested a top 100, you would cry. but the cookie cutter list of klov is weak and uninspired. THIS TOWN NEEDS AN ENEMA!

Why not 200?
There were a LOT of great games in that time period.
I can come up with nearly 200 that I'm sure most people would agree are top sellers or top earners, most iconic for gameplay, cabinet design or controller, or relevant for some other metric that parties concerned here would consider meaningful.
Like just plain old silly fun.
In that vein, how did Paperboy and Toobin' not make it?

I don't think there's a good way to create a top 100 when you're working with 30 years worth of stuff. No one person is going to have enough interest in all games to be able to create a good list. Just too long a time period.
Most guys around here are going to tell you few games are good post-crash.

The "Top 10 Most Popular" list needs some help. Star Wars #4? Really? It looks cool but is it fun? I'd put Asteroids there and replace Asteroids's spot with Frogger (missing from list)

Agree. I'd like to see it ranked as opposed to by year but it should be split into ages at least golden and post golden. The top 10 are fun but none that I personally would want just because they were before my time

I don't know what the intent is.

How is "Top" being defined now? How are we defining "Top" going forward?

Are these the most fun to play?
The best in their day?
The best today, from BITD?
The most desired by collectors?
The most familiar to people?
Greatest impact to videogame history?
Most fond of (nostalgic) for whatever reason?
The top performers in the arcade?

As far as a consensus goes, if each one of us turned in a complete Top-100 list, we'd be lucky if everyone had 15 of the same games.

If the list is intended to mean something, we'd need a shared understanding of what that is to effectively help to update it. Then, in theory, if we all submitted a list, we may have a 30-50% consensus, which is pretty effective considering our nature.

Otherwise, I'd propose making a Top-100 list from 1971-1990, and a separate Top-100 list from 1991-to wheneverbecauseIrespectfullydon'tcare.

Depending on the criteria, here are a couple games I'd like to see on the list if there's room, including some that have already been mentioned:

Drag Race
Canyon Bomber
Depth Charge
Skydiver
Polaris
Lady Bug
Turbo
Scramble
Alpine Ski
Crazy Climber
Thief
Mr. Do!
Popeye,
Zoo Keeper
Swimmer
Pooyan
DK3
Nibbler
DOT
Timber
vs. Excitebike
Paperboy
Marble Madness
Karate Champ
Commando
720
Toobin'
Operation Wolf
Rolling Thunder
Super Sprint
APB
Super Off Road
Hyper Sports
Super Hang-on

It would be interesting to see some categories based on threads or polls in the in the forum, like "Most restored game", "Most resold game", etc.
What was thought of as a top game in 1983 is often different than what is thought of as a top game today. Having a broader more curated list of replay or play meter published list would be interesting to me.
