Some guys at nesdev forums have hacked the rom code of VS. Super Mario Bros. and VS. Excitebike to change the color palettes so it displays correctly using the NES PPU when using the PowerPak cartridge.

Could their method of changing the palette code in the roms be used to eventually hack all VS. roms so the color palettes could be configured to be used with any VS. PPU chip? And do all VS. PPUs use the same colors but just in different configuration? Or does each VS. PPU have a totally different and limited set of colors?

each romset is unique, someone did a right up on putting the -vs- smb on a nes mb, and talked about how he did it, you basically have to write a "pallet" conversion routine that sits in free space that changes the pallet color codes.

i think this was linked in one of your above posts. its basically the 'howto' include the asm file. you would need to patch each game separately.

but how would you play balloon fight head-to-head :)

Yeah, VS. Balloon Fight 2-player wouldn't be possible on a NES.

But at least VS. Super Mario Bros. and VS. Excitebike could be played as true arcade versions on a PC10 with the Powerpak.
