I picked up a Gyruss a while back that has been sitting. I finally tore into it today, and I'm getting some graphical anomalies. My ship, weapons, background enemies, and music are fine, but all of the foreground images, enemies, and all the text are garbled or just big white/orange blocks. It's still sorta playable, but strange when most (but not all of) my enemies travel from the background into the foreground and become big blobs.

My voltages from the switcher are fine (tried them adjusted to dead on, a little high, and a little low just to be sure; no effect), and I already inspected, cleaned, and reseated every socketed chip on the board. I'm no expert, but I think my issue is either one of the roms has dropped some data or there's an issue with the memory controlling the foreground. Anyone confirm or deny my suspicions?

What would be my next step?

Problem half solved... The GY 8 Rom located at C 7 had a broken solder joint under the socket. This fixed my enemies in the foreground. Now gameplay is almost perfect but...

I still have a problem with all of the text in the game. No score, no in-game text, no title, no high score/initials, and the planet on the title screen has a white box around it. I'm suspicious of GY 1 and 2 located at J 11 and 12 respectively because the stickers over the eprom windows are pretty scratched up.

Should I just pull the roms and fire up the game to see if that is the center I should be focused on, or would this cause major issues elsewhere?

I've got a Willem (probably a knock-off) eprom burner/reader, but have yet to use the thing. Anyone have a good How-To?

Also, I was reading through Womble's How To Fix PCBs thread from ~15 months ago ( http://forums.arcade-museum.com/showthread.php?t=177192 ) and he mentioned a way to compare the content of my roms to the MAME roms, but never clarified much beyond that. Anyone have some info on how to approach that one?
