Working on a GnR and have a few problems:
1 magnet board drivers are bad and blows fuses. Pinrepair recommends replacing them with IRL540. Great plains is out of stock, Marco did not list them, who else might have these?
2 game always starts with four players no matter what and adds credits in between players. Same thing on freeplay.
3 random freezes especially during multiball.

Asking for any input or suggestions on these issues

Thanks in advance!

i would suggest taking your dmm to the ppb board and test the 1n4004 diodes and tip 36c's

as well as the bridge rectifier

alot of issues on data east that i find have been related to this board, also your resetting issue may relate to the mpu not getting proper 5v, multiball more than likely is pulling the 5v line down, if you havent already, install a remote bat pack

I checked, only 4.91v at the mpu test point. Looks like more components added to the list

1) Try Jameco:

2) Check the switch matrix and make sure that there is nothing funny there.

3) low 5V, check for burned power supply connections.

If it's not already done replace the fuse clips or at least check them for proper tension. DE is notorious for junk fuse clips. If you have the boards out replace the clips.

with regard to your credit issue....if it's power related, thats one thing. I would unplug the entire door plug and see if your mysterious credits quits or continues. hope that helps.....

I tried that and it will still add credits. Nice problem to have if you were playing it on location. It will be on freeplay anyway, but it keeps starting a 4 player game. I suspect these 2 issues are tied together somehow. I will have more time to dig further this weekend.

I wouldn't be surprised if you have some sort of 6821 pia issue with all the switch problems you're seeing, when one of those goes bad you get all kinds of weird behavior.

A great place for getting pinball parts when GPE is out is:

http://www.bigdaddy-enterprises.com/

Guy is originally from KC, does a really nice job. Has a ton of the electronics parts for board repairs.

I may have a spare 6821 I can swap out. If not, I have ordered from bigdaddy before.

So true! They suck!

I did a DE starwars the and guy never knew there were lights in the back of the PF.

Crappy fuse holders were to blame!

I did my Jurassic Park and Tommy. The Tommy a fuse dropped out from a clips from moving it home.

I sort of made some progress a bit a go. My tilt, constantly adding credits and doing multiple players at start of game is definately related. Long story so bear with me. I changed the 6821 PIA for the switch drive and return on the cpu and had no change. I had the playfield glass off and in attract mode, I started pushing switches at random.

For some reason the right pop bumper switch would start a game. I noticed if this pop bumper was hit before the first ball drained during gameplay it would add extra players to the game.

The second item I noticed was random warnings and tilts. By pushing the left pop bumper switch 3 times would tilt the game.

The third item was constantly adding credits. This was caused by pushing on the right slingshot switch. However this slingshot has power, but does not work(driver missing and blew the fuse when I installed one.

The 2 switches in each problem both share the same switch return(according to the manual. The 3 switch returns in the above problems tie into the same 4011 that connects to the 6821.
So my question is, would anyone agree that replacing this 4011 should take care of my problems?

The 4011 was the problem with the CPU I just got done repairing. If all the switches are in the same row, I'd check the diode for the row, then the 4011. Although if it was the diode I'd think it might behave differently, either nothing or constantly triggering.

I had the exact same problem on a high roller casino, traced it to the pop bumper and I said to myself, ''why the hell is there a wire going from the pop numper to the start button?'' (it too was adding players)

The fix was easy, it seemed it was wired wrong at the start button, wired it right by NOT including that pop wire, never a problem again.

More progress made. The right slingshot not working was caused by a bad coil diode that took out both the pre driver and driver. As far as the switch matrix problems, I have been reading that section on pinrepair and it indicates faulty components on that section of the cpu can signal other switches. I've ordered the parts to see if this will fix it or not.
Once I get every thing functioning properly, I will strip the playfield down to clean, wax, rerubber, rebuild flippers and a complete LED conversion.

Good news. I was going to ask you about this and I forgot. I bet you'll have it going in no time.

Looks like I found my non working slingshot problem. It appears that when the slingshot coil diode went out it took out the driver, pre-driver and the 7402. I had everything except the 7402, so looks like another parts order.
