heres a pic of my gunfight joystick shaft and assembly. from what i can tell it looks like a significant amount of wear. but i wondered if its just missing a grommet or spacer or something? it feels as though there should be something like a grommet or ring to stop the shaft from being on steel? being that its been over 40 years since it was made i can imagine theres been a lot of changes.
thanks

I know there are at least a couple thousand gunfight owners out there. If someone could look at theres to verify that would be tits.

Looks like a 4-way restrictor plate to me. Hole might have got a little bigger over time, but its job is just to make the stick not move too far. Wear on that part wont induce any extra sloppyness in the motion of the stick, just some extra range.

Are you saying that's what is being utilized now?(makes sense and looks right) or that that's missing? I'm thinking there is at least a grommet or some plug missing or worn off completely that would prevent metal on metal? And do you think there is significant ware or that the shaft was designed with the cutout?
thanks

The metal restrictor plate is probably worn and yes that is the correct configuration.

If/when the wear becomes bad it is possible for them to break.

I really wouldn't worry much about it though, you'll know if/when it happens. The disk will travel too far and soon the cowboy becomes hard to control.

Unless you have the time and desire, I'd just suggest you go enjoy the game shoot yourself some bad guys pilgrim. 😀

so the shaft is supposed to look like that? or is that worn too?
the restrictor plate is the piece around the shaft correct? That doesn't concern me as much as the shaft which looks pretty thin around where I consider worn.

I am pretty sure that it is worn, 40 years of metal on metal will do that. Ever seen worn out trackball rollers? They are the shape of an apple core instead of a solid cylinder. )( instead of ||

Right on both counts. I think you probably have another 40 years before that shaft breaks in two. Let your kids worry about it :)

Blake,
Sorry it took me so long to post photos of mine, I got totally sidetracked.
Anyhow, heres what mile looks like.
The metal plate (restrictor) has a plastic grommet in it.

BTW, if you wind up looking for replacement sticks, these are the same used on some of the old black and white baseball games like Double Play and Extra Innings.

Definitely looks like wear to me. My Berzerk joystick shaft was really worn like that, so I welded it, then used a grinder to bring it back to a round shape.

thanks for taking the time on the pics. after looking at yours I really want to rebuild mine. yours looks minty nice. Any idea where or even if someone sells NOS or reproduction plastic grommets? I would also like to replace the leaf switches, which after looking through my odds and ends seem to be a different size then most I have.
thanks

I totally missed the wear on the sick...

Having had to replace a broken restrictor on my game when I first got it, I was focused on the plate in your photo. HA!

Yes, you have quite a bit of wear there.

As mentioned someone could probably repair the stick and I'm sure there's some laying around in parts collections waiting to be used.

The grommet was news to me, but now I'm gonna grab my manual and see what it says too.

Someone already provides pics but I was downstairs tonite so I figured I'd add a few to the thread.
Here's a few pictures of my gunfight joysticks. They look similar in terms of the shaft having a notch
Mine have no center grommet either.

I was curious after seeing the bushings on Coindork's game.

I went through a handful of the Midway joystick games on KLOV and their respective parts manuals.

It would seem that bushings were not part of Gun Fight or other similar games with the "square hole" restrictor. I found them on Extra Inning which utilized a circular hole restrictor and bushings.

If your game is for home use it probably doesn't matter. On the other hand if your game is in a Barcade the Extra Inning set-up would probably be the way to go.

A little grease lightly applied to the joystick where it meets the restrictor will go a long way in the home setting too.

it will eventually end up being played on a regular basis so i would love to get the gromet. do we have any idea who might have some for sale?
thanks
