So I get the rebuild kit and go through the 3 hour process of removing 50 screws, etc.

I put it back together and go to plug it in. Well if I remember correctly, left and right are moving up and down, and so on.

so I pull the wires start to switch them around.

long story short

left and right works, up and down doesn't. I went through several combinations of moving the connectors, and I can get the "wrong connector" to go up and down when moving the ball left and right, but I cannot get any action on the other connector.

Seems like that little pcb is not working.
I mean, is it just fried all of a sudden?

It is possible that it is fried, especially if you were unplugging/replugging it live, but it is not very likely. You should pull both boards and check for cold solder joints.

I uploaded some pics of the trackball pcb in this thread.

I mean, I suppose I could replace every little component on the pcb huh? Unlikely the traces are fried huh? Seeing as it was working before I started changed connections around.

Is there a way to test each one?

Have you checked for cold solder joints? You could also just go ahead and reflow the solder, the board isn't very big.

The plastic component in the top of your pic is the optical encoder. Clean the inside of it (the area the spinner wheel fits inside) with some alcohol and retest. If this area gets dirty it can cause the issues you are seeing.

if both little boards look the same you could swap them to make sure your problem follows the board itself( sounds like thats the case)

with a littler luck mabye you have some cracked solder or a dirty opto..

I assume it's the board because I tried both wiring connecters on the other board (bothworked) and both on this one (neither worked)
I will try to go clean that bitch right now. I don't know if I have a tip for my soldering iron small enough to attack those without flowing the solder together where it shouldn't touch.

Ok, I cleaned the optical reader (whatever it's called) no change.
Didn't look like any solder issue, though I know the naked eye isn't always a good enough way to approach it.
