Greenville, SC Auction

I wish that was happening about a week later when I'm road trippin' as that should be a good auction.

Thinkin' I might be there. Going to a Panthers game the next day, so it'd be a lot of driving to go to Gville, dump games at home, go back to Charlotte, go back home. It'd be fun though.

It's only 2.5 hours away for me so I am debating the trip myself. Probably won't make it, but the pins might make it worth the time. Of course, there was the fact that I swore off Super Auctions after the first one I went to. Or was it the second. Either way, I am not a fan of them.

I received a SuperAuctions flyer in the mail about this today. They are claiming over 700 "units", 250 of which are claimed to be "like-new SKILL PINBALLS" (???). Is this another name for skee ball? It is listed separately from all of the collector's pins, which are listed BY NAME...

I thought these people were GONE???

I'm thinking a skill pinball is a BINGO pin. New Bingo pins were manufactured a few years ago. But for the life of me, I can't imagine why anyone would have 250 of them unless, payout pins/gambling were legal in SC.

Anybody planning to attend this auction should research the last two "going out of business" auctions at this place. Don't go expecting deals on pinball machines. Be careful if you plan to buy anything.

Not sure if its accurate but SA's website has a pdf of the items for auction. Again, I can't be for sure its the actual list.... if so, it's meh at best.

I got the flyer in the mail today too. Wow, some interesting memories of the big one there a number of years ago. Super Auctions and AGS worked it together.
A huge, huge mess. I'm sure others will chime in with some of the amazing stories.
I'm surprised that SA would go back there.
I still have a Collins Music marquee as a memento. :)
I got lucky, scored a few deals and got out the same day. Others tried to get games out off the upper floors for weeks/months.
1 freight elevator - 1 maniac dock master - one-lot rows of games upstairs selling cheap and Fred Collins stopping the auction...an interesting weekend.
Actually it was really cool to see such a big old place with so many pieces - if I can get away, I might go again, mostly looking for entertainment and with zero expectations...

Oh, so it is THAT place! I heard what a MESS it was. It had to have been more than 5 years ago. I didn't go, but I remember how they were building it up as a "historic" auction event. I heard that just as soon as prices went south, the owner of the equipment pulled the plug on the auction and cut it short after only maybe 30% or so of the auction was complete. Sounds like an interesting road trip.

Yeah, this isn't going to be like the Fall '99 one. (I was there and was lucky enough to grab two pieces on day one, before Rick shut it down on day two).

This is going to be like the one in 2008, and at the same smaller venue I believe (not the huge Collins plant). The last one was a Super Auction (Red Flag #1) and heavily advertised on local radio for weeks (Red Flag #2) and saw hammer prices (before tax/fees) on routed, parted out stuff, be higher than retail. It was a horrible waste of time and prices were through the roof. I'll say it again: hammer prices on routed stuff higher priced than shopped retail. And Rob Storment running it. Yeah.

There was another auction there after Fred Colins died. The family let the auction go to completion..but I overheard the daughter complaining about the prices. At that time they had move all the parted out MsPacs and broken crap to the loading dock area and were selling pool tables for 100 bucks ea. the only stuff with any value was the pinball machines..and the pin guys were out in force paying crazy prices for pins that had been on routes and needed shopping out. I got three Taito Space invaders cocktails..took one home..sold one at the auction to a guy and took the other apart and scrapped the carcass before leaving. It was an interesting auction because SuperAuctions does bundle sales when stuff ..usually broken crappy cabs..don't sell individually.

My experience was pretty good at the SuperAuctions at Cherokee Music last year (it might have been 2009). My son loved playing games on free play, and I got to see some collector friends. I picked up some good deals toward the end of the day, because the crowd had thinned out. For example, I got a dead cab for $15 that had a working Area51/Max Force PCB, and a $60 Gottlieb "300".

There were a few negatives, but nothing awful IMHO. There were some owner buy-backs, but a lot of games went cheap. When they auctioned off the vids in the warehouse, they would turn a game on and start the bidding as it booted up. But honestly, I think this lowered the hammer price on a lot of working games.

Yes, the Cherokee Music auction was a good one for me as well. Unfortunately, I STILL have not moved ANY of the games that I bought there into my arcade yet. Until I can get that huge billiards table out of there, those Sega racers are gonna have to wait...

Yeah, same here. I converted the Joust into a Multi-Williams and it's in the arcade; I'm happy with that. The rest of the stuff is still in my workshop. I'm planning to turn the Area51 cab into a shooter/fighter MAME (each player gets a gun, a joystick and 6 buttons). Not sure how that will pan out...

i am going and i'd love to meet other klov'ers please . I will have a detroit lions hat on. pretty sure i'll be the only one there with one of those lol

BAD NEWS for the auction. it has been advertised on local radio. this will bring in more people, more kids begging their parents to buy them something for christmas, more people who dont know what stuff is worth, overpaying. overbidding. bidding wars. sigh.
