Just wanted to show you some stuff from my small but important country for encyclopedic reasons and only.

Greek arcades were closed down altogether at 2001 by the goverment, due to gambling game issues, many money were lost in fruit machines.

There were all types of cabs available, but not uprights. Most cabs were sitdown or cocktails and had bootleg pcbs.A unique feature was that those cabs had a modified control panel,so that the joysticks were on the right hand and the buttons on the left hand!Newer imported cabs at the end of 90's were leaved unchanged though.
Also most of the joysticks were balltops with concave pushbuttons, later years bartops and convex were also introduced.

The most important games that most people played and remember are: pacman,mspacman,bubble bobble,phoenix,galaga,galaxian,space invaders,street fighter 2,tehkan world cup,pang,tekken,golden axe,tetris,sega rally,moon cresta,crazy kong,metal slug,super sidekicks 2-3,nba jam,snow bros etc etc.
most usa games like gaunlet,mk,defender, etc were not much popular here.

thats all

I always thought that cab shape was referred to as a "lowboy". They are all over the world, not just in Greece.

Thanks for sharing! I kinda like that style. Wouldn't mind having that in the house with a Multi-JAMMA option.

Thanks for sharing this. I'll have to show my Dad this. His parents (my grandparents, obviously) were both born in Greece before moving to America at a young age.

ofcourse they are,but the opposite control panels were unique as far as I know

Wanted to apologize if my reply sounded like I was being a smart ass. That wasn't my intent. These are really cool cabinets, a cross between cabaret size but with full sized monitors.

What is interesting is that games like Pac Man and Galaga are already kind of like this if you just get rid of the top of the cabinet and leave the glass bezel and control panel. This cabinet is lower of course, but similar.

I've discovered that I have trouble playing games in Midway cabinets because I am too tall. If I don't use a stool, I end up just staring at the marquee. :) I am building some games for my home from scratch and I will likely build some like the ones you have pictured. Thanks for sharing the pics!

all your comments are welcome,TOK my friend no need to apologize,Pauliadis you should visit Greece if you havent yet
I didnt expect that some of you would like those cabs style, thats nice :)

This is cool to see... thanks for showing us, as you probably already know from my asking in the other thread, I was really interested about the arcade situation there. I went to Greece in early 2002... I was ONE DAMN YEAR too late! ^_^' Kept looking everywhere for them and wondering where they went, I guess that explains it. Is that your machine pictured (or do you have any machines) and if so, how? Were the confiscated machines sold off for home use, did some places sell them to dodge the ban, or did you import it from another country?

Sorry, I know I ask too many questions, I just have a sick curiosity for international arcade scenes I guess. For example, I'm one of the few sadistic people who actually wants a Tower of Druaga cab :D

Arcade games are a tragic story in my country.Good news is that our goverment will allow again gambling games/fruit machines next year,so maybe arcades will have a comeback after 10 whole years,I hope so.
These are not my machines in the pictures,I dont have a real cab yet but something similar
watch it here:

Many cabs were destroyed because of the ban, others are left into the basements of their owners which they sell them at very high prices and others were exported to other european countries.

That's a sad story, but you've made a great set up there-- instead of making something monstrous or messing up a classic cab, you don't try to hide the computer aspect but you have an authentic (while not overboard, again, a pleasant change from most MAME setups) control setup. Very nice!

And that's good news on the fruit machines. While I'm not well-versed in your country's politics, I'd say it's a very good sign for arcade machines, since it seems they are far less offenseful "gambling-wise" and it looks like they were banned because they resembled the thing that is being allowed again.
