Seeing if anyone can answer this...

When I was a kid, around 1977 or so...
I used to play this video game at a roller rink, I don't remember the name of it but it was pretty simple.

You drove a car, and you would run over "stick people" walking around. When you hit them, they turned into a "cross grave stone". And the Cross would become an obstacle, couldn't drive through it, you had to drive around it. As the more people you ran over, the harder the game became because you would have more crosses to drive around.

It was a two player game. I think it was timed?

Don't ask why, but this has been sticking in my head for a couple of days.

Any thoughts on what this is?

Thanks everyone!!!

Yep

THAT'S IT!

Funny.. this could NEVER be made today!

Thanks, now I can stop thinking about it..

Sure it can, and basically has with even more gory detail.
Look at the Grand Theft Auto series.
Part of the sick fun of the game is barreling thru busy streets seeing how many pedestrians you can mow over before the cops finally kill you.
I mean Death Race is rather tame considering the bloody skidmarks in GTA.

Exidy was planning on a sequel with Super Death Chase but it was dropped due to the bad press of Death Race.
Only a few sample cabs were ever made.

Death Race! One of those games I have yet to play without a pair of roller skates on my footsies!

Along with a slew of EM pins... ahhh..... good times......

I remember playing that game as a kid too, but can't recall where..

It was a somewhat guilty kind of fun! lol..

Death Race looks awesome! Now where can I get one?? (breaking into Tohret's fit)

PS: when I read the title of this thread, I started singing Dragula by Rob Zombie...

DIG THRU THE DITCHES AND BURN THRU THE WITCHES AND SLAM IN THE BACK OF MY.......... DRAG-U-LA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

finding one may be a tad bit of a chore, and pricey if you do find one

If you ever make it up to Funspot, they have one that's beautifully restored.

The real spiritual successor, which predates even the first GTA game (admittedly only by a couple months), following Death Race movie -> Death Race game -> would be the Carmageddon series:

These were a *ton* of fun to play, and graphic enough for it's day that for the German release the pedestrians which were there in huge groups were replaced with zombies. I've actually been thinking of the "Cunning Stunt Bonus" you got for some of the flip stunts the last week or so, maybe it's time to scare up my copies of 1 and 2 and get them running on my computer.......

The YouTube link I posted is from Funspot I believe..

Yeah, I see that now :) I'm on dialup, so I didn't check the link, but just checked it to see if it was mentioned in the text box on the side (which it was).
To jedidentist, they don't seem to update their game list very often, although they do update other parts (like the tourney scores from last summer)
