Cleverly and I both had the week off (we're coincidentally starting new jobs in a few days) so he dropped by today to play some games, help me get the Vision Pro on my Ms. Pac setup correctly, and convince me to get a Wizard of Wor that was posted on craigslist.

I had just been plugging the Vision Pro into a power strip and turning it and the game on at the same time. Depressingly ghetto! He had a device that makes getting crimped pins out of molex connectors easier, which I totally have to grab ASAP.

We took his car to get the Wizard of Wor. If you're on Denver craigslist, the same guy is selling Galaga, Track n' Field, Tempest and Asteroids. The Tempest is actually the Irish one! I had no idea that was a legitimately different rev of Tempest - I just thought the guy dropped a silver coin door on his because somebody at some point kicked in the original one.

The guy had new side art for WoW, which he included, so I was thrilled. When I was bringing it over to Cleverly's car, I took a close look at the side as it currently was, and, well:

The swastika to the upper-left is kind of messed up, so it's good that the guy took a deep breath and really nailed it on his second attempt. You hate to be the guy who can't carve one into a game until like his fifth or sixth try. The wizard making the "heil Hitler" salute with his hand is some wonderful syzygy.

Anyway! I, obviously, can't wait to put the new side art on. Though I haven't unrolled it yet, so for all I know, when I do I'll find out that the wizard on the new art is in blackface or something.

(But seriously, thanks again to Jim for helping me out. I've gotta find the best method of getting side art off games, but when I do, it looks like WoW has fleck of black paint, like reverse stars, on white. That'll be sort of cool to put together for its restoration.)

Yeah, and yes, your username reminds me - somehow, I had no idea that the Wizard spoke so much. The versions I had played were:

- At the CGE (tough to hear what's going on)
- Emulated through the GP2x (always turned sound off so as not to waste cycles)
- A freeware version written for the PC that I don't think had the wizard's speech

So that was a real treat. The wizard's hilarious, and the fact that he speaks in gorfese makes it perfect. But - I understand that HE is the wizard and not me?! (Also, more games should thank people when its kicked their ass.)

Nice score man. I've had mine for over 11 years and we love it! Gets a lot of attention at my parties

For some reason, my WoW is one of the 3 least played games every time I host a party. (Which, of course, is horseshit; the game is great.)

i'm glad we finally got that for your arcade. i was seriously bummed you didn't get the one at the november auction, so cool this one is in fairly good condition, and hey, new unused side art.

Say, do you still have your pages up anywhere, where you talk about how you acquired and fixed the games of your collection? I had this link bookmarked, but it looks like it's offline now. It was really captivating reading. I love hearing how guys got their collection together. Not sure if the content is at a new URL or anything, but it was awesome. =)

WOW is one of the finest games, ever. Nice score. Love the voice, love the sounds - everything about it. Played it a ton back in the day. I have a pretty nice one. The paint job someone did on it is a little amateurish but otherwise looks great.

Those pages went down during the last redesign of TJG and I never got around to re-publishing them. For a couple weeks now I've been thinking about restoring and adding to them, but just haven't gotten around to it. (I'm considering moving them to a sub-section of my Arcade board.)

Perhaps I'll post an update 'round these parts when I get it done.

And thanks for the compliments! :)

WOW is awesome. It has such a high payoff with audio and visual when you get the Worluk or the wizard - it's like sensory overload.

How would you go about replacing the sideart? I also have some replacement art to apply. Is it as simple as using a little heat and pulling the original art off in one big piece? Is there any prep needed before applying the new art?

And while we're on the subject, does anyone have the original paint codes for this cabinet? My WoW seriously needs some refinished sides and new sideart, but I have no idea as to what color paint should be used.

And what about the paint splatter on the cab; has anyone successfully replicated that?

Haha, the wizard has actually shown himself a couple times! It's a thrill when he makes an appearance, and I can't get over how many things he has to say as the narrator, and how much he adds to the game by doing that.

Yeah, I think I am going to apply some heat and ... I've heard that goo gone is a good thing to use? (Or is that just for getting rid of, like, black paint to reveal the intended art on games?)

I read all the restoration threads, but never bothered to memorize the best practice at removing old side art. I've got WoW to do, and then Q*bert afterwards.

I was just going to use a standard white paint. But now you've got me thinking. I have no idea if it's an off-white of some sort. I'll see what I can find.

That I was just going to replicate with a toothbrush, actually, heh.
