Gran Turismo 5

So apparently this finally comes out today, after about 6 years.

Anyone have this yet? Any good?

It's been out a few days for some people, and I guess the reviews are "pretty good".... which isn't so hot, since it's been worked on for almost 6 years.
 
I don't usually play racing games too often. I used to play Gran Turismo on PS1 and I sure as hell loved it then. I'm probably not gonna rush out and buy it, but It'll be in PS3 eventually.
 
I was a huge fan of GT back on PS and GT4 on PS2... But the news on this latest incarnation disappoints me. I was a huge fan of Forza 1 on the original Xbox, and now have Forza 3 for the 360 and am loving that game. But it seems GT5 just isn't up to par with its heritage, even more so considering the huge development cycle.

The good...
* Graphics engine can pump out some very nice visuals, premium cars look great
* Weather and particle/dust effects look sweet
* Top Gear test track! I bet this inclusion will sell a lot of copies alone.
* Includes some race series that people will like, eg Nascar
* Finally, 16 player online play.

Now, the bad...
* At times, the graphics can look inconsistent and below average, with some glitches. Some of the track graphics aren't up to standard.
* Same old grindy gameplay to unlock cars. Forza 3 gives you all the cars unlocked in free play from the start.
* There are two 'grades' of cars - Standard and Premium. You only get the car interiors, nicer reflections, higher res car models, working lights/wipers and proper damage on the premium cars. Although the game has 1000 cars, only 200 of them are 'premium'. The rest are Standard cars, and are low-res hand-me-downs from earlier games with a PS3 coat of paint.
* Menus look cluttered
* Car customization nowhere near as impressive as Forza 3.
* Damage model looks to be disappointing, especially on the standard cars. With games like Grid and NFS Hot Pursuit doing really amazing crashes, this just isn't really good enough.
* Physics seems to be not much different, with the same 'smooth as glass' understeery feel from GT4. Although you can flip cars now, cars appear to bounce around like they are beach balls.
* Same boring hovercraft AI that all but ignores you and sticks to its line

I really get the impression GT5 was too ambitious, and was forced out the door before it was ready. It's a shame the quality isn't consistent throughout the whole game. Maybe in GT6 they'll build on GT5 and get it right, ie stop trying to top themselves for the number of cars, and make it a better game.

Gran Turismo has been a favorite series for me for a long time. GT1 was a game that was always in or at least near my PS. A friend gave me an advance copy of GT2 and I thought I was the shit for a few days.

Everything after GT2 felt like the same ol same ol with a little extra spit and polish. Yeah, they add some new features to it every time, but the gameplay itself has never really felt updated to me. It feels like the same game in a new package.

Forget GT. Go with Forza.
 
I dislike both forza and gt(gt more),they are like flight simulators,not real games to me
I still play daytona,sega rally and outrun :)

I feel the same way. No offense to anyone who likes Driving Sims, but I just get no enjoyment out of changing tires, getting a new license, and all of the technical stuff. I prefer arcade style driving games.

I have the same issue with Sports games. I liked Madden games because they were fun to play for a while, but then they started coming out with the micro-management bits in the game. Its like, just let me play a quick game or season. I dont need to know about salary caps, or whatever.

Driving sims like GT and Forza are about memory and perfection - memorizing the track, perfecting braking as late as possible, perfecting that line through the corners, getting past other cars cleanly without touching them, working the gears to stay on the power band in the higher rev range. Then you have to learn it all over again when you tune or change cars.

And to go the extra mile to get those laptimes down, it does involve tuning the car, but this is secondary to perfecting car control and learning the track for most players. That's why most games these days like Forza have auto upgrade that will automatically apply recommended improvements to the car.

They do require a large commitment in hours to learn, and require a huge amount of concentration and very fine control.

I don't doubt this isn't for everyone. Pretty much all my gaming friends don't like driving sims, and they suck at them, but love games like Flatout, Burnout and Need for Speed Hot Pursuit.

My favorite racing game would have to be wipeout. Thats the hardest crap I've ever played.
 
I don't own GT5 but on every game forum I have been on since the release has been filled with complaint threads. Once again too much hype and no delivery on it. Microsoft is probably playing GT right now studying all of it's flaws to once again bring us a better quality racer with Forza 4. It releases this coming spring/summer and I will be buying it yet again. I am an avid Forza 3 player so if anyone wants to race or drift my GT is Melysman. I drift almost daily if I'm not on NFSHP
