Grail aquired: Street Fighter 2: Champion Edition big blue

I know for a lot of the classic era collectors, this game is not a grail, but for me, it's been one I've been after for a while because I was picky about the cabinet it came in. I finally got my hands on a "big blue" Street Fighter 2: Champion Edition! Overall the game is in really nice shape with a few scrapes and scratches here and there. I think what's pretty crazy is that it's mostly an unmolested Champion Edition (actually it is running a Hyper Fighting board) and so many of them have been converted well beyond just the update to Hyper Fighting. The CPO and marquee are cherry and the K7000 Wells has a nice picture, but it has the white knob flyback, so I have some work I'd like to do on it. Overall I'm very happy with the purchase and a nice Street Fighter 2 has been something missing from the collection. I used to play this game so many times at different locations it just seemed wrong not to have one in the lineup, but ever since I knew of these big blue cabs I've wanted that specific one even though I played a lot on a red z cab back in the day. Anyway, here are a few pics. The biggest thing is I am missing side art, but that's easily fixed. Beyond that, there isn't a whole lot needed on this thing cosmetically.

Edit: BTW, has anyone ever tried removing the control panel on these cabs? I had the CP open for a minute and see several wood screws so I'm hoping it can be removed.

I have two nos street fighter decals for that cab if u ever need them. got them in with alot of other arcade stuff, they look perfect pm me for pics if interested.

nice machine

Very nice pickup! I love me some SFII. HF FTW!

The big blue is just that, a big cab. But the huge marquee is cool/unique and it's definitely easier to play head-to-head with the large CP as opposed to the cut-corner Dynamo cabs.

Very cool. Owning a big blue was a "must have" of mine as well. All of the big blues are fucking beasts, so one is definitely my limit on them...and I am a SF/Capcom fanatic. Pain in the ass to move and if yours is like mine, you have to go behind the cab to access the board. They are still cool as hell if you have the space. That CE control panel looks monstrous. It looks like it sticks out further than any of the others I've seen. Unless I am mistaken, it is at least further than mine (SSF2 version with the map CP art).

ok, where's that B/W applause gif? I am very happy for you.Well done! Your long search has paid off with a wonderful looking cab.
I hope the monitor looks as nice as the rest of this!

I never took off the CP but I did take off the metal sheet top off of the one I had. (sold)
It was heavily converted but this looks very original to me.

HF is the tournament version!

that is a nice looking cab ! Street Fighter is a must in my book . Good job man !

I believe Captain Commando was the first to use the big-blue style of cab that the "dedicated" SF2CE cab also uses. The Punisher dedicated cab also used the same style cab, but in black, with full side-art.

Those newer big-blues with the rectangular speakers and Q-sound setup were first used with later Capcom CPS2 games like Super Street Fighter 2, Marvel Superheroes, etc.

Congrats! I purchased my SF II CE a long time ago, and I am very glad I did. When I was in high school this game brought us back to the arcade. My friends and I spent countless hours at multiple locations playing this game. It was a must have for me! To this day it is one of the games I spend the most time playing.

SuperGunGuru, I see in your VAPS that you have a Punisher pcb. I have the full-size Punisher marquee for this cab. Let me know if you're interested. It's always cool to swap out games and marquees once in a while on these cabs!

I have two of these cabs myself. One is a dedicated Captain Commando, the other is a Marvel Super Heroes conversion in a Punisher cab. I have the full-size marquees for X-Men vs. SF, Super Puzzle Fighter 2 Turbo, Darkstalkers, SSF2 Turbo, and SF Alpha 2 that I swap once in a while.

Just curoius.. big blue encompasses all Capcom games or just that one?
Heres the Marvel Vs Capcom notice the cp stick out a little different, the base is flat and the speaker has two seperate boxes.

Rough shape and color are the same.

There are several different versions of the big blues. The op has a dedicated CE. I have a dedicated super sf2. I have heard of the dedicated captain commando but haven't seen one. I've also seen a 3 player version for avp, which either left the factory with the cp set up for a third person or it was a damn good op job.

Beyond those, they became the standard catch all Capcom cabinets for the cps2 era. Well, I should say for for most cps2 titles that is. Post ssf2 big blues tend to use the metal plate cp art. Beyond that there are several different styles.

Thanks everyone for your comments. :) I'm really happy with this cab overall and given its condition and generally un-hacked state, it's been worth every cent. This one even has the lock for the back door and the keys for both cash and coin doors. Overall this one is definitely one of the nicest ones at the time of purchase compared to so many project cabs.
So let me know what needs to go to make room for it :D
Nice score!
I've actually thought about that, but nothing has been decided yet on what I'd sell if anything.

Thanks, Prairie! The monitor does have a good picture, but I plan to cap and flyback it at least. Yeah it's been a long search for one to come up locally. The only other time I saw one was a 2 or 3 years ago and it was a MAME cab listed on CL for $250. I didn't wan to spend that on a basically empty cab so I passed on it. The timing on this was finally right.

The Punisher is awesome, yeah! I actually have it running in my Slammasters Q*Sound big blue cab right now. :)
