Grading firm Wata is facing a lawsuit for allegedly ‘manipulating the retro game market’

There's a corner of every community that exists purely to suck all the goddamn fun out of something. I think here what started off pretty harmless as people showing off new and unboxed games turned into a massive duckwaving contest to see who had the better condition of something and how much higher of a grade they could get. Because the ultimate goal was monetary value it snowballed from there until it was snobby kids with dad's money, counterfeits and graders working on the side to bump the grade on products, just a little.

There's something similar in the PC gaming world where some sleazebags will put new shrinkwrap on a game or boxed product and sell it again as new, because the more minty the box the more money it can make and there's so many suckers right now paying top dollar for garbage 386's and "gaming built" Pentium 1's.

A fool and his money...
If you can't play it then why give a shit anyway.
Holding grossly overpriced game cartridges as curios is nearly as dumb as fighting over digital images of monkeys while staring into the maw of a recession.
Numerous things have hit the wall for a stream of new bagholders recently it seems.
Geez, never saw that coming.

I have still yet to attend one the infamous duckwaving contests.

For real if you want a kick ass vintage computer go with a Pentium Pro. Itll run some shit too fast, but the good shit always works

I appreciate people collecting older computers, since they definitely have their place in history. However, there is a point of silliness in any collecting. Is something meant to be used, played, etc.? Or is it a museum piece to never be touched... I've collected computer CPUs for many years and have quite a collection, however the thought of grading any of my collection is truly laughable. I keep them to look at, but have zero motherboards, etc. to use them.

Had I kept any of the dozens, if not 100s, of computers that passed through my hands... I could retire at some of the current prices.

Speaking with that being more my specialty than arcade and slot it's a mix of having neat old machines to play with and a bit of showing off, but now when individual machines are being sold for hundreds or even thousands of dollars I find a lot of those machines just end up on display. I think the going price for a 70's machine like the PDP-8/e is $3000 right now? I remember when a complete 5150 would easily fetch $1000, then tanked down to about half that today unless it's all boxed. It was easier 10 or 15 years ago when most of this was still E-waste and just about nothing involved a serious investment to throw a box together and have fun but now kids are grown up and in the wave of neon grid color infinite planes, awful VHS digital effects and synthwave they want to be nostalgic for anachronistic DOS gaming and things begin to get silly because they want to zero in on "ultimate X" machines. Stuff like MCA bus Sound Blaster cards selling for $1000, $500 IBM EGA monintors and $2500 IBM terminal keyboards. It no longer becomes just buying a system or parts to have something enjoyable. It has to be the max. It's gotta look intimidating for reddit and good god I wish I knew how half these people could have a disposable income like that and still be insufferable ducks and/or so technically inept to the point of "I just got an original retro vintage Macintosh! Now how do I load games?"

I want to as well, but I hear everyone there are total quacks.

It's like this in every hobby, exactly as you said. A certain subgroup doesn't want the normal stuff, they want the thing that's about useless but rare, or the best of the best, etc. When nobody had that back in the day.

So years ago selling Nintendo games, people would come up and ask for Little Samson. Nobody ever played Little Samson, they just heard it was the one to get, so they don't want Contra, or Punch Out, or Metroid, or Super Mario, they want the one they think is worth money so they can say they own it.

Vintage radios and stuff, nobody wants the Philco regular radio that's worth 30 bucks but sounds great, they want the rare super duper one that's worth 5 grand, sounds exactly the same.

Over and Over again, every hobby is like this

without getting too philosophical, makes you wonder what they're really after

I remember seeing Zombie Revenge on one of those price lists in like Funcoland for real cheap. I remember wanting it because it was called Zombie Revenge. However I had never seen the game. Now I realize that I should have gotten that over fucking Dragon Warrior as Zombie Revenge looks stupid and insane.

Little Samson was fun though, everyone skipped it because it sounded like some wisdom tree shit
