I got this machine from CraigsList, no idea of its history. I suspect that it's a re-import of a German export: It has the word "Foreign" stamped on the particleboard base plate that holds the power supply components, and a notice inside the head not to use a sound-and-speech board, lest it be damaged. Apparently some PO switched out the main board and sound board in the past, but left the original sound board power supply, which is not producing the right voltages now. I'm getting 6.8VDC instead of +12, 8.2VDC for +30, but the -12 and +5 are fine; the result is some pretty psychedelic sound effects. I was considering a replacement from PBResource, but it appears to have a card-edge connector, whereas mine has a pigtail connector labeled A7-J10, which connects to an inline plug labeled A7-P10.

So, I figure I have two choices: get one of the replacements and make an adapter from the exisiting pigtail, or fix the existing one. Either way, I'd need a schematic for this board that looks like a reject from a Flintstones trailer park (see attached pic). Can anyone help with this, or suggest something I haven't thought of?

Thanks for the quick reply! I've already been there, 'tis how I resurrected the thing in the first place. Problem is, he doesn't cover the sound board power supply at all. I can't find a complete manual to download, the one that I can find only has the first 18 pages, and I'm pretty sure it wouldn't help anyway: I found a manual from Black Hole (the next game in the series), and this supply is definitely not the one from the schematics and drawings in there.

Perchance does anyone have a manual from the export model? My German is a little rusty, but I only need the schematics anyway.

I got a manual for Volcano at home.... I'll check it out when I get back and can help with questions...

Perhaps I should rephrase the question: has anyone ever seen a SB power supply board like this one? Better yet, have you a schematic for it? The pinout doesn't seem to be the same as what the manual states (allowing for the Molex-to-card-edge conversion), i.e. the volts called for in the manual don't appear on the indicated pins. I'd be happy enough to get a pinout of the A7-J10 connector. A Google search for "A7-J10" is quite unhelpful.

Yeah I have one of those pieces of garbage on my Mars God of War and am having problems with it as well. I just picked up a manual as well, hopefully it will hav some info on it.

1/ no I've never seen a powersupply board like this..
if Volcano is the first model where Gottlieb started using cheap soundboards for export models, it's possible this is factory and they installed this until the real pcb was ready
email Clay from pinrepair.com, maybe he has seen them before ?

2/ I'm in Belgium and have in my Black Hole (which isn't working yet) also such a cheaper soundboard.
Pinouts are different so like the warning message says - don't plug in a sound&speech board which the domestic models use.
The export games just use the previous sound board (which doesn't have speach), so you can use schematics from any older game with this type of soundboard..

I believe the earliest system 80s with sound and speech (MGOW and Volcano) used these exclusively, probably until the actual board was designed. I could be wrong but I've only seen these on those two games.

The only difference in pinouts between the sound-only and sound/speech boards was for pins 3 and 4 (sound only was 12VAC and return respectively, sound/speech has +12VDC and Sound32). I'm definitely not getting AC between those pins. This leads me to think that they had both domestic and import versions of this particular power supply, and whoever put the sound/speech board in my machine was smart enough to also swap out the power supply. Any thoughts?

Don't think so - it looks original with the 'inspected by' stamp and fuse label.
And if the wiring doesn't look hacked, it was all original..

Weird thing is I only know of Black Hole coming in 2 versions.
Never read that Volcano also was available like this in a cheaper export model with sounds only..

Have you emailde Clay from pinrepair.com about this ?

Do the game numbers on the soundboard eproms match for Volcano ? (so you don't have sounds from another game installed)

Anyway, I believe that games with the older sounds only soundboard did not require a separate powersupply for it (see: http://www.pinrepair.com/sys80/jbond.jpg ) - so if you have an extra powersupply it should work with a speech/soundboard.. (like this: http://www.pinrepair.com/sys80/s80nyw2.jpg )

Where are you located? i have a spare sounds board power supply for this type of game.
I am a bit of a gottlieb system 80 aficionado.
I have counter force, mars gow x2, black hole, haunted house and even just bought a volcano myself i am about to pick up from my dads house in va this weekend!

I'm near Baltimore, Google says it's a seven hour drive to Columbus, not out of the question. Do you have a manual for MGOW? If so, does it have a schematic for the SBPS? I'd really like to find a schematic for this PS (or POS, as the case may be), I have geek cred sufficient to troubleshoot and replace components from there (I already rebuilt the CPU PS board).

Also, would you be interested in selling one of your MGOW's? I'm not afraid of a project if it's not working. How much for the HH? Send me a PM.

Like I said, whoever put the sound/speech board in there also put in the right power supply, and it would seem likely that they'd choose a domestic original.

Yes, but he hasn't replied.

Yes, 667/S1 and 667/S2. It definitely makes Volcano sounds.

My SBPS is mounted on the left-rear side of the cabinet, not in the head. The wire harness leading to it looks completely original.
