Gottlieb System 1 takes 30-50 seconds to boot - Sinbad

I recently picked up my second pinball machine and went though all? of the proper testing before plugging in my Gottlieb System 1 Sinbad machine. The power supply -12V only measured at -7V, so I put in a Rottendog instead of repairing. After I turned it on I thought there were still problems because it did not boot after 5 seconds like it should, but after 30 seconds it booted and played perfectly. If I turn it off, then turn it on right away, it boots up in 5 seconds, I I wait 20 minutes, it then takes between 30-50 seconds for it to boot, but works great after that.

I heard a lot about bad connector pins, and I just finished replacing every molex pin in the upper cabinet. Still long boot times. I tried searching for this particular issue but found no others.

Thanks

Sounds like a voltage isn't coming up quickly enough? May want to leave it off for a bit, and check your output voltages after leaving it off for a while.

If it works immediately after you shut it off, or after it's "warmed up", perhaps the transformer is flaky?

If you notice the -12 is still low, check your respective AC input coming off the transformer; the original power supply may well have been fine after all...

Check it when it's not under load as well, to ensure you don't have something pulling it down (IE a bad/flaky cap)

Just a couple of things off the top of my head; interested in what you find!

I checked the -12v on an input cap on the cpu board, it was -12v instantly, so I'm assuming it's another issue. The 5V was fine also.

Anywhere else to look? It boots consistently in about 40 seconds...

I think Ken was thinking of the orange cap in the system 80 pin's that often needs replacing - don't think you have that on System 1.

Hmm - if both voltages look good immediately when coming into the CPU board, then perhaps it's the reset circuit.

From what I'm reading - see if pin 14 at test connector 1 (or chip Z2, pins 7 & 9) goes from -12 to +5 shortly after powering up - if it's not, that's likely your culprit. May just need to replace the cap's in the reset circuit (C31 & C32), transistors Q5 or Q6, or the IC at Z2.

Since it's eventually coming up, and seems fine once it's been up for a bit, I'd probably suspect the cap's first if it does look like it's in the reset circuit.

That's my best guess anyway!

Yeh I was thinking system 80.....my mistake.

However, system 1 definitely has connector troubles so make sure you get the cables from the power supply to cpu board cable repinned as well as the cpu to driver board cable.

Any electrolytic capacitors on the cpu replaced? Battery changed to an off-board one?

I was reading about the reset circuit at pinrepair dot com and was wondering about the capacitors c31 & c32, what kind are they? I don't see any rectangle versions at any of the pinball part sites.

"May just need to replace the cap's in the reset circuit (C31 & C32), transistors Q5 or Q6, or the IC at Z2."

Ken, I had previously ordered 200 pins and have repined every connector, installed a new power supply and off-board battery. I think pinning is like knitting, very relaxing while watching TV ;-)

Fixed!

I replaced the 2 caps, 2 transistors and Z2 in the reset circuit and it boots up every time in 5 seconds like it should. Plays perfect! Thanks
