Gottlieb/Premiere mylar....these things never had clearcoat, right?

Was just thinking about this again..this Stargate has mostly full playfield mylar on it and I'd like to get rid of it, but the inserts are the completely screened over kind...you know, the ones where the art looks like it's applied directly over the whole insert?

Just wondering if anyone knows how these system 3's fare when trying to pull mylar given that as far as I know, they never got clearcoat. Is this a System 9/System 11 level debacle waiting to happen if I try to pull the mylar? This PF is really NICE and I don't want to screw it up if it's a huge risk, but would like to get rid of it, as the edges are a bit dirty and I don't want it to cause damage either.

I don't have any personal experience doing this so I'm not trying to disagree with GuidoTorpedo, but I did watch a video recently where Jeri Ellsworth removed mylar from a Black Knight.

Even she says it doesn't always work out though. Just something to consider.

Leave it, especially when it's only at the edges. Try to cut them if they're loose.
Mylar will clean very well using a magic eraser sponge.

I can't believe she did that well on a Black Knight 2000. I had HORRIBLE results witht he same method on my old BK2K.

I would leave it if it's not all torn up.

Only some of the edges are bad. I will probably try to very gently lift and razor them off. Some tard reattached one lifted corner with scotch tape.

I have used the freeze method many times, and only lost a little of one insert on one machine. This was on the first playfield I ever removed mylar on and I don't think I used enough freeze spray. Good luck if you do it.

She seems to have a knack for these things. If I did that, it would be a horrible mess and I'd probably mention it in my suicide letter.

Hi there

I pulled the mylar off my Stargate about two weeks ago using the freeze spray method. I lost a TINY bit of paint on the edges, but overall it'd say less than 0.02% overall paint loss. Just around the edges in one or two spots.

I've got significant touch up work to do in non-mylar'd areas though. :)

Took two and a half cans of "compressed air". I went REALLY slow and used the absolute minimum amount of effort to pull the mylar as it "popped" off.

Think I'm just gonna leave it. I'm about 90% sure that I'm selling it after I get the slingshot fixed anyways, and pulling it won't increase the value, but has the potential to greatly DECREASE the value if I screw it up. :|

Probably best. If you pull the mylar you should really do a new clear coat to protect it - which is a ton of work.

Stargate was factory clear coated but it is a thin clear coat. I have restored several Gottlieb SYS3 playfields and removing the mylar can cause problems. Just something extra to deal with. They are easier to work on compared to Williams Sys11 playfields.
