Did a restoration on my Gottlieb Mad Planets control panel recently that I thought I would share. It had a badly worn cpo and the incorrect stick as allot of Mad Planets machines do. I stripped the panel and removed the cpo with Aircraft Remover. Then I sanded and painted it with Rusto satin black and applied a repro cpo. Then found and purchased a broken MACH 3 joystick and assembly from a klov'er. Also purchased some NOS Gottlieb stick shells on Ebay from another KLOV'er. These were listed incorrectly as Bally/Midway replacements and did not see much bidding. I then purchased the Gottlieb reproduction stick insert from Chris Moore and put it all together...

It seems the "Mad Planets" stick demands a premium price from some people. Since it is the same stick as MACH 3 and those seem to be readily available I do not see the logic in paying allot of money for this stick. Once you have a mach 3 stick just purchase the repro insert from Chris Moore and you have the exact same thing.

That is gorgeous Perf and I hope I get to start a thread like this some day. Love the Mad Planets.

Just didnt paint them after I polished them up. I can always do that later if it bothers me but I do prefer them silver for now.

I have a mad planets that I have been (taking my sweet time) restoring. I did a VERY similar job to what you have done, but since I did not have the repro (or original) insert, I simply painted a fabricated insert black as a placeholder. Where can I buy this reproduction piece? Thanks...

Not The Same

Well I looked at my Gorf mini stick today and it has 2 screw holes on each side. The Mad Planets stick has only 1 hole on each side and is also slighly more erect(heh). I am sure this is why the shells I purchased on ebay were incorrectly listed as B/M replacements.

Mad Planets sure is fun to play! I had forgotten how great it is before I did this CP rebuild. You really need to gap the stick properly for the best results though.

Thanks, thats some good info to know. Just looking at the pics I would swear they were the same part. Here is another question....will they interchange?
Mad planets has some awesome sounds on it. Very cool game. I would love to play a dedicated, only played it in mame but I have thrown some MP sound roms in a qbert once. That was an interesting experience.

When I was looking for a MP I thought about just getting a CP and a Mad Planets PCB for my Q*bert to check it out. I was told that it's just a ROM swap and you don't need a chip (or two) on the Q*bert sound board for Mad Planets.

The sticks are not the same, similar in shape, but that's it. MP sticks were made by Wico and have two annoying snaps in the head of the stick that were really meant as a one use only sort of deal. Assemble once, never take apart. Most shells you find now typically have one if not both of these snapped off or broken. They also have the two security screws at the base. Trigger on the stick is rectangular, not like the triangular one on Gorf or Tron and I have NEVER seen one for sale all by itself. Of course Mylstar probably has one.

If you have to install a new MP insert from that cool guy that made them *cough*, I would recommend drilling out your old insert to reach the clips and remove them without breaking...you won't be sorry you did it that way.

Im pretty sure you can use a QB sound board in a mad planet. The QB uses the same pcb but its fully loaded vs the MP sound board which is only about half populated. Im guessing you can probably leave the voice section on the sound board and it just wont be used. Other than that its just a matter of swapping the two sound roms.

Yup, that's what I was told. Just never studied the boards.

Fun game!
