gottlieb em startup problem

For Gottlieb parts it's always Steve Young's Pinball Resource.

That numbered wheel should be part of the playfield plastics set.

Also contact the Shay Arcade Group and ask if they have reproduced that part yet.

I love Pinball Resource. I've bought a couple old stock playfields and A ton of parts. I would love to see steve update that website, it would make my life alot eazier

one last question. the lights that specifically light up the player 1 score reels are out. are they lit in series so that if one goes out, they all do? or do i most likely have an issue somewhere else? any ideas?

More than likely an issue with the player advance unit. Probably just a dirty contact. Could also go through the ball count unit but more than likely the player unit. Unless all the lights are just burnt out.

still having the player one score reel no lighting issue.

ok, so i cleaned the advance unit, which is just labeled advance unit under the playfield, however it does control the 'advances' set in the game by lighting all the lights, so i'm not sure if that is the correct unit.

i did clean all the switches except for the ones in the reset bank, as i still need to pull that out and clean it. i did swap out the bulbs in the player 1 score sockets with known good bulbs, and still nothing.

there were a couple of spots on the continuous stepper unit where the wire was coming apart and not making a good connection. those were replaced and new pieces of wire soldered in. all the stepper units have had the contacts filed clean now, and all the plug/post plugs were cleaned with a wire brush.

at this point i'm not real sure what else to look at, as i can't find a manual or schematic or anything for any of these old gottlieb games. and all the other lights work as they should (with the exception of a couple burned out ones and sockets needing replaced), so i'm at a loss of what to check.

There has to be a stepper unit or relay that switches it between player 1 and 2 , and the contact that activates the lights is probably dirty or out of adjustment. Did you check in the head/back box? About the manual Steve Young over at Pinball resource should have it. If not this guy has it listed in his catalog:Jeff Wager (976)475-0144 [email protected]

i hear ya. so far i haven't been able to find a scat online so i've just kinda jumped in blind. but thanks for the info, glennon, i'll see what i can rustle up.

just wanted to update everything is finally all fixed and working.....

as far as the fix, i cleaned all the switches in the reset bank, and noticed one broken wire (solder broke off) on the score motor and another on the 2nd player scoring relay in the backbox. fixed those, still no change. looked at the 1st player scoring relay, turns out one leaf switch (the one that controls the lights) on the relay (found it by probing them) was dirty and not making good contact to light the lights. cleaned it and adjusted it ever so slighty and now all is well. vacuumed it out, and now just waiting for my rubber set to come...

Awesome. These EM machines are not as hard to work on as some think. It just takes time and patience. Most times it's allways just a dirty or misadjusted switch that's causing the problem. Hope you enjoy it for a long time.

i will say this. the reset bank is confusing, cause it looks like all the switches are out of adjustment till you look at the relays and how they operate...

oh, and glennon, do you have any tips on tightening bulb sockets rather than replacing them? do you just need to solder them together?

Ken is right. The pinball repair site has a good fix for bad sockets. I usually just replace them though. Here's another repair site that may be of help to you. http://www.xmission.com/~daina/tips/pub/tip_archive.html
