I have a 1971 Gottlieb "Now". It's a lot like Big Indian. When I got it, it was working about 90%. I restored it to 100% working. Then I got started on paint. I removed the playfield and the head, but left all the workings in each. I then sanded and primed and painted. Now I've put it all back together and nothing works right. Sometimes the start button works, sometimes not. When it does work, the score won't change. I've checked all of the playfield contacts and nothing appears to be shorted. If the pop bumper is hit it works, but the chime solenoid hangs up. I really don't even know where to start. Any help or step by step troubleshooting documents would be greatly appreciated. I was looking forward to this being the next pin in my pinball row. Now not so sure.

You are probably right. I rolled the paint instead of spraying because of that, but there was an extreme amount of paint dust from sanding. I have decided just to go through the thing completely and clean every contact. That oughta take a while. :(

Your best to just pick a starting spot and go through and clean and adjust everything. It takes some time but is well worth it in the end. Sounds like you are restoring it so this is something that should be done anyway. If you need any help I'll try and help best I can. Try this website if you haven't allready. http://www.pinrepair.com/em/index.htm

Yep, I agree. This is what I decided to do. I started today. I cleaned about 40 switches and one of my problems is now cleared up. The ball in play wasn't advancing and now it is, so things are improving. I can't start a game though. It was stuck on ball 1 and I was able to get it through to game over. The flippers are still on and the score doesn't advance, but I'm making progress. I'll post some photos if anyone is interested in the restoration.

I didn't take any photos before I sanded it down to the orginal artwork, but here's some photos after. After getting dimensions of the original artwork I then sanded it down to bare wood.
