I was thinking of maybe finding a black hole for my next classic project. I restored a haunted house, so I am familiar with doing the necessary system 80 mods. My question is does black hole have a dead space issue during gameplay that plagues haunted house from the wide open playfield, or does it have better flow?

IMHO, the 'dead space' issue in Black Hole is not so severe. There is still an open playfield by necessity due to the lower playfield window, but there are so many slingshots and pops that the ball speed in that area is never lacking. I think both are good games, but have different strengths and weaknesses. Really I think all of Haunted Houses strengths are in it's sound and art package and the mystique of having 3 playfields. Black Hole is a faster game with some deeper objectives, like locking balls for multiball.

I've never played black hole, but thought it would fit in with the rest of my older pins. If I could find a project in decent shape fairly local, I would get it.

I have one I restored and love it..
There was an unbelievable HH locally here completely ground up restored and clearcoated everywhere.. I actually felt bad playing a game on it.. but when I did the game seemed to go on forever.. simple and I found myself getting bored on my first game in a couple decades... I had wanted a HH next to my BH, but decided against it after that.. so I would say if you like HH, you'd probably love BH.. hard as hell to get that multiball but when you do its pretty cool.

Black Hole is for sure the better playing machine between Black Hole and Haunted House. Not much going on in the center of the playfield, UNTIL you get multi-ball! No other machine gives you such a weird perspective while playing! The ball(s) on the lower playfield are rolling the opposite direction than the balls on the upper playfield. When you see the balls on the playfields going in the opposite direction, and then trying to keep your eyes on them and avoid draining...good luck!
So to answer your question....yeah it's somewaht dead space...until you get multiball....then all hell breaks loose!
