I just got a Gottlieb System 1 Countdown pin and all the wires are cut at the backbox.
Does anyone know where I can find a pdf version of Countdown's manual?

I searched but came up empty. I found a System 1 manual but the wires dont seem to be color specific.

Thanks in advance for pointing me in the right direction

This should be in the pinball section.

You won't find Gottlieb pdf files. You can either purchase an authorized & licensed reproduction from Steve Young's Pinball Resource (www.pbresource.com) or buy a used original on ebay.

The Gottlieb family is very protective of their copyrighted material. The lawyers at Gottlieb Development LLC watch/read alot of forums looking for infringers.

Here is a link to a copy of the Cease and Desist letter typically sent out by the lawyers regarding Gottlieb manuals:

The Gottlieb lawyers do play hardball.

if anyone has a scan of the schematics to a countdown they are willing to share
my email is [email protected]..
thanks for lookin out for me on where I should post Ken. you are are exactly right.

Does Gottlieb even MAKE pinball brochures now? They seem a bit overprotective, it's not like they make significant money off of these old manuals anymore. I feel your pain, though, I've been searching for a brochure for a Super Mario Bros pin for three years now... I'll probably just go for eBay at this point. :(

Yes, Gottlieb makes pinball manuals now.

I don't get the point. Gottlieb's only claim to fame is that they used to make pinballs. To that family, all they have is the right to the name... so of course they're going to protect it. Do you honestly feel that they should just abandon the trademark?

If they don't protect the trademark, a judge won't let them own it anymore and will make it public. So they have to send out cease and decist orders or they'll lose the only trademark they have.

Also, if you've been looking for a Mario manual for 3 years, why didn't you just send the pinball resource 20 bucks for one?

Actually many of the Gottlieb parts that Steve Young sells are made from the original Gottlieb molds under license.

Odd, I had read somewhere here that Gottlieb went out of business in the late 90s a couple of years back... guess it was a lie :p And I don't care THAT much about the manual or I would've spent 7 bucks to get an original off of eBay, which I might eventually do... I just don't see why restricting PDFs is any more an issue for them than Atari, Sega, or Namco, who allow it all the time. I would understand more if they had an official online store I guess, but I wasn't aware they were still in business. That makes a lot more sense, admittedly...

The Gottlieb family (and heirs) are in the pinball parts and manuals business through their authorized dealers like Steve Young's Pinball Resource. They have allowed Steve access to original Gottlieb factory molds and blueprints to manufacture high quality replacement parts under license.

I just finished cleaning up and putting my Count-Down back together (and yeah, I went ahead and bought a manual when I started it), let me know if there's anything from the machine you need photos of.

Just to put this to rest;

my man Driph sent me a photo of plug J7. All the connnectors were cut and the wires were soldered directly to the MPU. J7 was incorrectly hard soldered so I had trouble with the switch matrix. After reviewing the photo Chris (Driph) sent me, it winds up that the color coding in my Gottlieb system 1 repair manual (the one I bought it when I first got into repairing pins) was incorrect. conversely the color coding chart on Marvin's pin repair site was spot on, so now my Gottlieb Countdown is up and running perfect. Big thanks to Driph for the photo and Marvins pin repair site;
