I picked this up off of CL today for $100. Its in pretty good shape. The cabinet is solid. The control panel has a bit of the overlay peeling off on the edges. The monitor needs work. The previous owner said that the monitor would come on sometimes and other times wouldn't. It does have neck glow and a red led lit on the chassis. I'll start working on it this weekend. Game does play blind.

Here's some pics:

I had never seen one in person. I need to figure out the monitor (never worked on a vector). It does have some kind of monitor overlay that gives it a 3D effect with a blacklight. Looks cool but would look cooler with the game playing.

I think it's a good one to get... $100 is a good deal!
Wins all around!

First thing I would do regarding the monitor is check for cold solder joints where the connectors go on the chassis (P600 and P700). I have only seen two ADs but both suffered from this and had intermittent monitor issues.

Good luck and awesome score at $100!!!

The monitor reflects off a half-silvered mirror to the front glass, and behind the mirror is the blacklight and cardboard artwork.

The monitor is cake to work on - it's essentially 3 amps (X, Y, beam intensity) and a high voltage supply for the tube. The red LED lit on the chassis is the spot killer, which indicates you're not getting deflection, hence Michael's suggestion about P600/P700. Those connect the four chassis-mounted transistors to the deflection board. There's also the possibility that one or more of those transistors needs replacing.

I'd also do a cap kit as long as you've got the deflection board out. The caps are 30 years old now.

Thanks guys. I'll pull the monitor pcb out tomorrow. Friday is a bit crazy in the restaurant biz so I'll be exhausted tonight when I get home. I'll let you know how it goes.

Nice! AD is awesome.

On the monitor - yank the board, resolder EVERY pin of EVERY connector. Check all 8000 fuses with a meter, and also check R100 and R101. If one seems off, you can find them at Radio shack I believe, or just pull them both and solder heavy wire in they're place. Yes its a documented mod from the factory. This fixes a good 90% of all b/w vectors.

On the game itself - it should have a blacklight backdrop. If its not working, open up the marquee, remove the screws for the fixture and slide it out - the whole assembly comes out with the speaker, and you can then get to the black light bulb/starter.

Mirror can be removed from the back for cleaning, and if you do also clean the blue overlay on the monitor.

Enjoy!!!

Awesome score man! I just bought a AD a couple weeks ago for 250.00 with a dead monitor too, so you got a great price.

I won't be able to bring mine home and work on it until next weekend - on my way home from the CAX - can't wait!

You're not kidding, great game:

Gotta love Asteroids Deluxe. I sought out my 2nd when I sold my 1st and regretted it...

I can't wait for the multi-kit (if it ever happens)... mainly because I want a full high score save (instead of the top 3)

I think I paid $175 for mine at an auction. It was working, but needed some TLC. I cleaned it up, capped the monitor to fix its jitters, repaired the burnt pads on the PCB edge and replaced the edge connector (some brainiac had soldered the power and ground wires to the PCB after the pads burned).

Sometimes I think I'm the only one in Eastern NC that checks craigslist. I've gotten quite a few machines and didn't have to rush to get them. $100 Galaga with a bad power supply. $300 6-slot Neo-Geo cab. Missile Command CT working for $300. $100 working Lethal enforcer. $200 Frogger CT. $50 N/W Centipede CT (another $50 to fix). And a $50 Galaga conversion that is making me $100 a month on location at my restaurant. I didn't go get any of these the first day I saw it. Some of them I waited a few weeks until I had time to borrow a truck. I waited a month to get this one. Guy emailed me last week saying it was still available.

Raleigh CL is another story. I rarely catch those deals in time (two hour one way drive plus I work 60 hours a week).
