About 6 weeks ago I had lunch in a local Italian restaurant with a few of my friends. We meet up their every other week and I noticed next door to the restaurant inside the auto parts store which had gone out of business was a Pac-Man upright with the monitor setting on the floor in front of it. My buddy Wade who knows the owner said it was for sale and I should make an offer. I told him if I had the room I would but I would have to pass. Each week I would look in the window to see if it was still their. This past Thursday Wade calls me and said he just talked to the owner and he had to get rid of the game. He wanted $400.00 for it but my buddy told him that you could find one working for $200-300.00 and non working you would be lucky to get $150.00 for it. My buddy said make him an offer, all he could say is no so I said I would give him $100.00 cash but my truck was broke and I didn't have a way to pick it up. The guy said give me $110.00 and I'll bring it to your house. I said sold and he gave them my phone number and address. Now I was thinking where am I gonna put another game. He was suppose to call me to let me know when he was on his way. I waited all day and no phone call. All day Friday the same thing, no phone call. I figured he changed his mind about selling it so cheap. So today about 12:30 the door bell rings. I open the door and see a pickup truck in my driveway with the Pac-man game in the back. So we unload it, I give him $110.00 and I now have a no-working but complete Pac-man. Turns out the guy who sold it owes the strip mall and the restaurant. One of the guys that delivered it said he remembered playing the game in the Restaurant when he was a little boy.As always they had no keys, they had forced the back door off so I already put a new cam lock on. I looked inside and looks like I have a extra main board laying in the bottom. I plugged the game in and turned it on, figured it might play blind but it's dead as a door nail. I didn't have time to check fuses or voltages yet, maybe tomorrow. The game is well used but looks good for it's age. I figure for $110.00 I could not pass it up. You never know, maybe theirs cash in the coin box. No key so I guess I'll have to drill.:D

Nice Deal ! That will be easy to fix up . I'd love to get a Pacman delivered to my house for $110 !

Good deal, and you can't beat the $10 delivery fee! :) I bet that if you replace the fuses AND the holders, it will fire up.

You might be able to just unscrew the cam on the back side through the back of the cab. If you do that you can just open it up put a new lock on the coin door. I actually on my game take the lock cylinder out, knock the tumblers out put it back in. Then you can use anything that will stick in there enough to turn the lock.

Yep, that's what I did. Because the monitor was already out it was easy to reach in and unlatch the control panel. The foam seal on the lip of the control panel was melted to the bezel glass. I had to use a putty knife to separate it but finally got it open. I looked down and saw quarters in the coin bucket. I got a hole $1.75 in the bucket. Right away I noticed a broken wire on the test switch. I unscrewed the cam and got the coin door open. I checked all the fuses and they were all good but one holder was weak so I'll provably replace all the fuse holders but it was good enough for now so I powered it up and now the marquee light works. Someone had put a florescent tube type in it but I could hear no sound. This it my first pacman but I assume when it powers up it makes some noise or plays the Pac music? Tried coining it up and nothing. I next checked the edge connector and I think that's a problem. Some of the connectors looked burnt and the plastic edge connector looked like it had been hot enough to slightly melt so before I go any further I am gonna replace the edge connector. Don't have time right now but maybe in a day or 2 sense I have a new connector. I'll post back what happens next.

110.00 for a pac-man.. good, good deal there. I got ripped off on my pac-man. :( After all it was my first game.. I didn't know any better about prices. Makes me wonder if I should sell it just to get my money back.

Excellent score!

I want to see what's going on behind that front kick panel...

it doesnt play music until you drop a quarter and hit the 1 player button.

Thanks thats nice to know. I thought it migh be like my Baby Pacman. I had to try one more thing. I took a small screwdriver and rebent the connectors in the edge connector and cleaned them with a nail emeryboard. I now have 4.8 volts on the 2 small caps on the board and 15.8 on the large cap at the top of the board but the game is still dead. I tried coining up a game and hitting start but nothing. I wonder if it could be the broken wire on the test switch? I'll have to resolder it and see.:)

Hell yeah! I would have gone for that and I already have one, along with a Ms. Pac and a Super Pac cocktail.

See if you can find anybody nearby that will plug your boards in to see what they do.

That edge connector looks really horrible. I don't see how it can supply enough juice to run anything without heated up like a lamp.

Any pops from the speaker when powering up?

Any life from the monitor?

You've got to somehow isolate the problem. It sounds like your AC wiring is OK if it's supplying enough to generate 4.8 at the board. Replacing that connector and pins could get that all the way to 5.0V

Still, not a bad buy

I have a new edge connector so replacing it is just a time thing. The condition of the monitor is unknown,it was already taken out of the game so I might as well look it over and cap it first. I have a 13" G07 I use for a test monitor so I might hook it up and see if I get anything out of the test mode. I can also bypass the AC power and hook up a switcher or get a Pac to Jamma adaptor and try it in my Jamma cabinet. I'll figure something out. Still lots of stuff to try.

Thats a super nice pac for 100.00 and you got two boards to boot...only wear to cab is typical on that side due to hand wear....
some magic eraser...new t-molding...and new capped monitor and you got a nice pac there...
Shouldn't be to hard to diagnosis after a little troubleshooting..

very nice score. hopefully the front kick panel cleans off and you have nice art under there. even not working, that's a good pick up for the price.

Thought I would give an update on my Pac man game. I am still working on the K 4600 monitor from HELL which I am getting ready to update that in the monitor section which is here.
http://forums.arcade-museum.com/showthread.php?t=125826
The cabinet came with 2 Pac man boards and the filter board was also laying in the bottom of the cabinet. I tried both boards in the cabinet but could only get one board to register a credit on the coin meter but would not play a game blind. So I ordered a Pac to Jamma adaptor from Bob Roberts along with parts for the monitor. I figured it would be easer to test the boards in my Jamma cabinet. I put the jamma adaptor on the board that was in the bottom of the cabinet first and turned on the power. All I got was a white square on the screen in the upper left side. I looked the board over and decided to pull the ROMs one at a time and clean the legs. The first one I pulled one of the legs fell off and 3 were barely hanging on. The pins are rotten. I also noticed one of the ROMs was missing. So I next grabbed the other board, looked it over and all the chips were their so I plugged it in and powered it up and the board booted up and plays fine. It appears to have the speed up ROM because Pac man is fast. I guess the power supply on the board could be bad so that might be why it would not play blind in the cabinet or maybe the speaker is bad but I'll try it again after I replace the fuse blocks and put a new edge connector on the harness. So I couldn't be happier with one board working and I'll bet the other board will be an easy fix.Now back to the K 4600 from Hell.:D
