Good info! Either the boards I had used different value caps, or more likely, some of them were just old and needed replacement.

Is it possible it affects more than the melody? Seemed like all the sound effects were off-pitch.

That particular cap is just for the melody chip. Sound effect frequency issues are often related to one or more 555 timer chips. Here's a nice explanation of the discrete audio sections for Phoenix:

Looks like nice one. Good score. I learned it doesn't mean squat unless you like it, and have a connection to it. Looks like you have both of those things going for you.

It is a relentless game. It sort of reminds me of Yars revenge.
