Got a brand new K7400. Weeks later and I have a black dot on the screen. Help! (PIC)

Sorry man, I simply meant if the dots there when the screens off, live with it or find a new tube. Defective was just a reference to the issue at hand. I'm sure It's nothing you've done.

Thanks for the info! I thought defective could mean it is just going to keep getting worse (which it may or may not, again I have no clue how or why it happened).

However, I do have to say one thing. The eBay seller already contacted me and told me he will take it back and try to fix it. That is one awesome seller. I am a bit upset I will be out $100 for shipping it back but still, he could have just told me tough luck. So I want to highly recommend 1953stan on eBay. The only person I can find who still has these monitors for new, is selling them for what some people want for them USED, and he even is willing to take it back. What a stand-up guy. Now I just have to ponder if it's worth me losing $100 on the shipping costs, but something tells me it is.

You could try using the monitor with a dedicated game where the blemish falls in a black area (Pac Man o some other maze games) and is harder to notice. I mean it would be a pity to reject a NOS tube...

From the macro zoom on the photo you posted, you will probably never notice it while the action is going across the screen. I'd see if he will refund you a little bit..and call it good.

As others have stated, if you can see the dot with the monitor off, your phosphor mask has developed a defect and the tube will need to be replaced.

Thank you (to you and everyone else replying). I guess I have to replace it. However, I was wondering if you knew how this phosphor mask defect occurs and could it even somewhat possibly been something I did? And is it a sign that this will just keep happening at different places in the display?

Manufacturing defect, most likely. A small speck of the phosphor mask has broken off or chipped off.

OK, thank you. I am trying to understand the technical sides of this. I can't really find much obout a phosphor mask. Do you mean shadow mask?

If you did mean shadow mask, from what I can tell, it's just a plate with holes in it for the phosphors to pass through. If that is the case, how would that get messed up since it's just a metal plate with holes?

Of course I probably have no idea what I am talking about but I like to learn so any info would be greatly appreciated.

Here read this:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shadow_mask

And this:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phosphor

The beam goes through the mask and hits the phosphor in the right spot to light a color. People are suspecting that some of that material was somehow got damaged so that part of the screen isn't lighting up is all. It's probably nothing you did and to me looks really minor. Every monitor I've ever looked at had some kind of imperfection.

I would just use it as is and keep an eye out for a cheap/free compatible replacement tube on craigslist or something.

Thank you. I was assuming by phosphor mask he meant shadow mask; I did read up on those two but I wanted to make sure. The only thing I don't get is how the mask got damaged. That's so odd to me.

I would do the tube swap thing but how do I know which are compatible? Is it just literally looking for a 25" CRT? It doesn't matter what kind? Even a TV one is compatible as long as it isn't "flat" glass?

I am probably just going to exchange this one though. Like I said, the whole reason I bought one brand new was that stuff like this drives me crazy. If I were going to buy one with something on the screen bothering me, I would have just used a used one :)

For things this large, fragile, and heavy, do you guys find UPS to be better and/or cheaper than USPS? I don't even know if USPS takes things this large and heavy. I am not trying to be lazy by asking here; my car is tiny and it is going to be quite a feat getting this in there and lugging it to the counter so the less trips the better!

Use FedEx their the most reasonable. just need to literally pack the crap out of it, to ensure safe delivery.

There is no way in heck I'd be shipping a monitor due to a single pixel being out... but that's just me.

I know. I must sound nuts. But I went out of my way to find one brand new just because I obsess over stuff like this. It's really, really annoying in games that do not have busy graphics (so basically anything from the 80s). But I admit I am very anal about this stuff.

i know exactly where your coming from, so do whatever makes sense to you and makes you happy!!!:D

Where are you located? Someone may be willing to buy it from you, which would save you the hassle of shipping it and the seller of taking it back.

I ended up just buying a 2nd one from the guy. He took $100 off of the price since he would have had to spend that to ship the replacement to me anyway. And I saved $100 off the price of having to ship it back to him, so in reality I paid a very fair price in the end for a brand new monitor.

So now I have two; one with a screen defect. But I am glad of this outcome because I will leave the one with the screen defect in the garage in case I ever need it for parts some day. I would imagine if I ever needed to replace my monitor in 10 to 20 years it might be literally impossible, so I don't mind this outcome. Not to mention, having 2 of the exact some monitor is even more beneficial if swapping parts in the future ever. I also really like that the k7400 series do not require an iso transformer. Just plug it into an outlet.

It is going to be kind of ridiculous that I will have this 2nd monitor forever using up storage space in my home but it will make it easier for me to sleep knowing I won't be screwed in the future.

I still have no idea how this defect even happened but thank you to everyone for your replies! I would have not known it was permanent otherwise and would have spent time trying to fix it. Thanks again. :)

HAHAHA! :)

I have several extra monitors.

However, you might want to rethink storing in your garage. Not sure where you are located, but you don't want to store it where you have condensing temperature changes. Like cold to hot and high humidity or you will rust/wreak your new monitor in storage. Basements are a better choice than a garage. "End table" in the corner of your climate controlled game room is best. ;)

Yeah I am in the northeast USA so drastic temperature changes are a definite thing. Excellent point. I almost hoarded plasma TVs when I heard Panasonic was going to stop making them! HAHA :) But I didn't because OLED was finally getting cheaper and seemed like a great alternative (I hate LCDs for televisions; plasma and OLED only).

Glad to see I am not the only one out there!
