Gonna temp-MAME it until I can afford to do it right. I've got this 27" TV. I've removed the old busted tube from the frame, kept all the parts, and I'm hoping I can just take the TV tube and mount it back to that?

Is there anything I should know about working with it? Anything I need to be particularly careful with as I find places to mount the other boards in there? I heard something about the frame inside of these TVs being electrified or something....

I don't want to get killed trying to set this thing up, lol.....

You're going to have fun mounting the tube on that frame - most arcade monitors are 25". You might be able to bend out the corners of the frame to make it fit though.

As for mounting the TV chassis, just be sure it's secured and won't short out against the bottom. You might even be able to cut out the bottom of the TV's housing and screw that into the frame to mount the chassis. You'll just have to get creative.

TV sets are hot chassis, just like arcade monitors - that is, a large amount of the electronics are directly connected to the AC line. The inputs on TV sets are isolated, however (unlike arcade monitors, which must be powered from an isolation transformer).

And, obviously, discharge the TV before removing the tube, just to be on the safe side...

You should be familiar with HardMVS.com
There was a school me thread here also.

Get rid of this TV and look for a 25" instead. You can try to slide it in there and see if it fits but I would only put in something like that cased and not frame mounted. You'd have to remove some pieces and or come in from the back. I forget the mounting. If you try to keep it, check the tube size and compare it with the 25" tube you are taking out. See if you can slide the whole cased TV right in there.

If you want to build something that looks good in this shelled out Neo Geo and isn't drilled to hell, the core of your games will be MVS games setup for that control panel. If you want to use a TV, then try sticking a 25" in there and drive it with a soft mod Xbox (original.)

25" TV Free-$40
Xbox - $60 or less (you'll need help soft modding it and loading in MAME and the MVS roms)
tinted glass ???
CP Overlay $40 (reprint at arcade overlays)
Sticks and buttons $40
Marquee (get a single slot one) $20-30

I used a reprint from Arcade Overlays w/ lexan over that. PITA to cut.

the hardest part of this plan is.

mounting a TV in there.
hacking the controllers but i've done that before... you can also use PS2 controllers and adaptors. I have adaptors from PS2->Xbox I could sell for cheap to you.
Soft modding your Xbox and getting all of the files loaded.

The nice thing is that you'll be able to probably load some other games that aren't MVS but would still be really fun on there. No Capcom 6 games but the machine would still be pretty awesome!

Well, if the original monitor was 25", then that's my bad..lol. I could've sworn somewhere I saw it was 27. I got this TV on the cheap for 15$ off CL, and it's got an auto-on function, so I figured what the heck at that price...whoops!

I thought it seemed a bit big when I was picking it up..should've trusted my judgement there. I don't mind finding a drop-in TV, but I don't want it to look ghetto-y even if it is. At least I've got the original bezel to make a copy from.

I've got all the PC parts to make a more-than-adequate MAME setup available. Don't need to risk my Xbox/360 with all the hacking and junk to get it to work. My plan is to get some sheetmetal and make a new CP that will fit on the Neo hinge (or just the cabinet if I have to..) for MAME, and then save and restore the original CP as it should be.

I put a 25" TV (tube only) in my Neo Geo MAME. It was compatible with the original wells gardner chassis & frame. I don't think there is much more room for a 27".

The PC is plugged into a VGA to 15K CGA converter so it will connect to the wells gardner chassis and not damage the screen. Plus, it is the best way to display MAME while trying to preserve the "arcade" image quality.

*Yes, I fixed the wavy picture. It was a matter of where you hook the sync wires up*

He didn't have any good monitor parts to start with.

If you are going with a TV as your display then Xbox mame is an easy and cheap way to go. It's all in one box, sealed, runs fine, and it outputs to your TV easy... no need to fiddle with that. I like that it fast boots also.

Now going from your PC you have access to Hyperspin which is awesome but you still need to deal with video output issuse.

Well, quick and dirty's the way this project is going, unfortunately. If I don't find an actual place to PUT this thing in the next few days, I will probably be putting it back on the CL for free. Probably shouldn't have even picked it up to start with given our space constraints, but I just couldn't pass it up and I can't bear to mess with the Big Blue and jack that cabinet all up for MAME, even if the CP is already 3/4ths of the way there.. :(

Assuming I can make a place for it, I don't really mind the video quality being a bit "off"...it's already off playing MAME on the LCD for my computer... anything CRT is an improvement at this point, even if it's stretched and rescaled a bit, IMO. Getting output to S-Vid or Component isn't an issue with the cards I have...I've kept all the dongles for them, and I know I had at least one that had S-Vid out. :)
