perhaps you are having an issue with the bally squawk and talk board? If you're not getting the voices, that's where they come from .

its hard to say if i even have the board since my gorf has been installed into a conversion cab and looks to be wired jamma with a adptor
i do still have the level adv light's but they are wired wrong lights work but advance in the wrong order

ouch thats a killer
and im guessing that i would still need to have it programed

Nope...It'll drop right in. In the last couple years, I've had to replace 4 or 5 of those on Gorf's and Wizard Of Wor's. If you happen to have a Wizard Of Wor, you could swap it to double check....they're usually socked from the factory. IIRC, they are also in Speak 'N Spell's (childs toy from the early 80s'.

oh hell yea i got me a old speak and spell in my old toy box from when i was a kid good thing i kept all that junk all these years

and so they are a socketed chip on the gorfs thats a plus
anyone have a schematic of the gorf board so i can locate it on my board set

Also note that the game sounds and all voice sounds are on seperate channels with thier own volume pots. I'd check this before anything else if you havn't yet.

Just for the record, another very possible culprit is one of the speech amplifiers on the game board or on the remote volume control board. I just fixed my WoW speech by replacing the amplifier on the game board.

I would recommend taking a small CHEAP headset, ear bud, or ear phone (like the ones that came with casette tape players for those of you over 40!) and cutting off the connecter and stripping the wires back 1/4". Then attach one wire to a ground point and the other one to pin 22 on the speech chip (labelled SC-01) (top right pin of the chip at the top left of this image http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/0/06/Gorf_game_board.jpg). If you hear speech (oh yeah, the game needs to be turned on) then the problem is somewhere in the amplification. If you do NOT hear speech, the problem is likely the speech chip (but it could still be circuitry feeding the speech chip).
