My gorf seems to be fully working but I just noticed that the mame version
of gorf says "cadet" and "captian" and mine says "adet" and "aptian"
Seems to be missing the ability to say "C".

Any idea what chip on what board handles this?

Thanks,

SC-01 handles speech for Gorf / Wizard of Wor and others. it's located on the 1st board in the set (you should be able to see it without removing anything from the cage AND it should be socketed). Not an inexpensive chip, that's for sure. Not sure if anything else could affect its output. I'd probably try to re-seat it and see if that helps..if it does, might need to replace the socket.

yeah, i'd be pretty careful with that chip since they're getting harder and harder to come by and so far nobody's made a replacement.

mine took a crap (to the point where the game was unplayable.) i picked up a dead boardset and found a good SC-01 with a slight "whistle" which seems to be rather common. i figure i'll live with the whistle until someday another working SC-01 falls into my lap since i can't find any easily for sale.

I remember being confused by this back when the game was new. I was playing it, and asked someone what a "space audit" was, and they pointed out that it was saying "space cadet."

So these things must have been pretty flaky from the get-go.

I have a stack of boards with those SC-01 chips on it. I'd like to find someone local with a game that used 'em that would work with me to get them tested.

It'll be after this house stuff is done and I get them dug out of storage.

That'd be cool. When the time comes I'll have to figure out a way to compensate him.

A See 'n Say, or a Speak & Spell? The See 'n Say was the wheel with an arrow, and you pulled a string to have it say something. The Speak & Spell was a thing with a keyboard, and used a speech synth.

Thinking about it, I find it highly unlikely. The Speak & Spell was made by TI, and used a TI speech chip.

Okay, I just grabbed the datasheets, and there's no similarity between the two chips' interfaces.
