GORF Side Art Comparison

My colors were off as well and the sideart has pretty well peeled off both sides.. the only art I have ever bought to not stick and peel off after a few months.

Is it just me, or did Midway really half-ass the sideart on Gorf. It could have been so much better. Or at least bigger. Or the right shape, ala Tron.

Amen. The style is fine, maybe a bit sparse, but the shape sucks. Tron-shaped/sized side art would have been awesome. I said the same thing when I started this resto. Someone should re-imagine it that way. If someone commits to doing it that size and shape, I'll hold off on installing this stuff and buy yours when it's in production.

Phet,
How about doing one of the early stenciled Gorf's. Now that would be cool.

I had one of those stenciled Gorfs and I've always regretted letting it go. I have a pretty nice decaled one now.

I want to think there was also a difference in the speaker placement in those early games, as if there was a speaker under the control panel somewhere. Can anyone confirm?

I believe that was correct. One speaker was above the cab where it is on the later release and one was below the front bezel. That's why you'll see some Gorf's with the louvered area above the control panel. It was for the sound. Different sound effects from the different speakers.

Sideart installed. The blue of the side art is a little darker, but seeing as I didn't use someone else's codes and actually color matched the original side art for my paint, it's really not too far off:

I'm still looking for one of those louvered bezels if anyone has one.

Side art looks great, Phetishboy! I went out to the garage earlier with the intention of shoveling the driveway but ended up tinkering with my Gorf for a while first.

Definitely a summer of stripping/repainting/reapplying side art ahead of me. Also noticed the rear panel on mine was split in half and (poorly) repaired so I may be cutting a new panel there too. Also the plastic bubble that goes around the monitor on the rear panel is cracked :(

Hey thanks. It's a bit of work, but worth it in the end.

Looks really nice Phet. Can't wait to see it in person. Nice work! I like the colors of the repro art...

Thanks man, you'll see it soon enuff. And Spy, glad you care, not many others seem to anymore. They'd rather argue or insult each other I guess. This place needs a purging.

Very nice work. Glad you reproduced the white splatter and evidently did it well. I think the sideart looks great. Who is to say the original art hasn't faded a bit. Gorf is one of few games that I've owned, gotten rid of and wanted to own again. I ended up restoring a 2nd one that's not leaving the collection. Here is mine again:

I had to repaint the black areas, find a nicer glass bezel (flaking), lower bezel (cracked), repro cp (worn out), have the boardset repaired, replace the joystick, fix the monitor, Bob kit on the p/s board, connectors..but it was worth it.

Nice work as usual Phet. I am always amazed at how your restorations come out. Top notch and always so quickly. You definitely are dedicated to bringing your games back from oblivion and they always show in the end. I can never seem to get the ball rolling myself. I gather all the parts I need, but the cab work never seems to come to get going.....
