Now I have heard this talked and complained about for a few years. No one can find screened Gorf art, so of course they turn to the ink jetters. Now in my research, the only place that actively prints and advertises GORF side art is Arcadeoverlays. They had some color issues on their first few prints according to a few folks, they got some complaints and supposedly made the effort to tweak it. Now I am not sure if they started with a piece of original side art to get a color match in the first place, but after seeing the comparison, I'm not sure they could have. I'll show the comparison to you with flash first, which makes it seem like a decent, if not perfect match. The original swatch from my cab is laid over the repro:

Here it is in super macro with no flash (excuse the focus, the main issue I am trying to show is the color difference):

The repro is teal, when it should be a rich baby blue in the ship, and a royal blue in the darker areas of the background. I'll use it, and I have no bone to pick with Arcadeoverlays, but I just wonder what they used as a source to colormatch? Just having this small swatch of the original side art is enough to get the colors right, wonder why they can't seem to? I thought some might like to actually see the differences that have been bothering people who have ordered this stuff.

Color Matching raster scan files is VERY diffiucult especially on more detailed art like this.
theres only 2 ways to do it basic selective color changing the tints and hues to try and get close to what it should be or what you think it should be.

simplier scans you could just magic wand in speffic values if you knew what you were going to get on the output end.

Vectors are much easier you can just click select change and change again if not right.
but if a scan isnt correct you start over.
the other problem is sometimes when correcting 1 blue youll through off other blues in the mix.

vectors also provide a much more vibrant pure color over a "mudded" color RGB/CYMK scan
especially with the yellows and blues.

Its things like this that have made color matching Cheyenne and Ice Cold Beer
very difficult and very time consuming.

Yeah, thats not even close. Still, it doesn't look bad if you don't know any better and have nothing to compare it to.

It actually looks like they changed the color of the ship from when I got mine. Mine looks to be closer to the right color on the ship

Well that sounds like a step backwards. *sigh* I colormatched the cab blue from the original side art:

I sort of punted. I just color matched (at least close enough, to the sideart background as well) for the cabinet color.

I figure I'm never tearing off that sideart even if someone comes up with something perfect to original.

Maybe there is some variation in their prints because mine was a pretty good match. I matched my paint to the original blue cabinet paint, and it was a very good match. The overlay seemed about right to me.

I do agree that it seemed many of the colors were a little pastel'ish when i put it on but it wasn't very far off the original and I was satisfied with the blue background.

Nice, that looks like a very close match.

This thread is helpful. I think I'll order the side art and have my paint color matched to it when I get to painting my Gorf.
